The question is, how much longer will they remain in NATO? Obviously EU integration is very far out the door right now.
And once they aren't part of NATO how soon until Russia starts to prod deeper at their ancient rival? The US may retain support of them akin to saudi - but I imagine being liable to defend them in event of their own provocations is unacceptable.

based on the fallout and how many people have been arrested/displaced from jobs, it seems more and more likely this was a staged event

It's politically convenient for cleansing the government of rivals, but I can't imagine why those involved would put themselves in the position to stage it, knowing the ramifications it would hold for them in the end. All the officers and even foot soldiers complicit in staging it would have needed a motivating factor to do so, and I just don't see it.
Granted, it's weird how ineffective it was in the end. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's helpful for Erdogan's party to have staged a coup offensive. It divides the people, sure. But also opens the door for more protests, motivated lone assassins and crumbling international relations. It's helps his case as much as hurts it.

you make some good points, as well
this could also be the long-con. high payout, new opportunities. you can't have everyone involved already out of prison, otherwise it would be more suspect.
it's not uncommon, within organizations, for people to take the fall for a share of the profits or have security for loved ones

He might have smelled it coming and got ready for their first move before pulling the trigger.

so the EU wanted to bring ISIS sympathizers into the union which would open the borders to all the other nations for unrestricted travel and all turkey had to do was open their borders to ISIS
but the UK is racist because they wanted no part of that shit

Negotiations were started on 3 October 2005[6] and out of 35 Chapters necessary to complete the accession process, 15 have been opened and 1 has been closed.[7] The membership bid has become a major controversy of the ongoing enlargement of the European Union.[8]
The EU has also been engaged in a visa liberalisation dialogue with Turkey including a "Roadmap towards the visa-free regime".[9] Provided Turkey meets the final five conditions imposed by the EU, it will be granted visa free travel to the Schengen Area.[10]
Current major opponents of Turkey's accession are Germany (though the migrant crisis has resulted in compromises) and EUC president Jean-Claude Juncker. France supports it[citation needed] and so too did the United Kingdom, despite the UK's then-Prime Minister, David Cameron, suggesting otherwise in 2016.[11] Both the European S&D and the European People's Party are against Turkey's membership. Outside the EU, the United States has long been one of the primary supporters of Turkey's membership.[citation needed]
We'll be waiting quite some time before anything like that happens.
Erdogan needs to get swoggled first and order restored before their application can be considered.
