2 lb rye bag..got a question I'd appreciate advice on.
    #23443693 - 07/15/16 11:35 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I want to order some premade 2lb rye bags from one of our trusted vendors (I only have pf tek experience thus far that's why) and my question is can I use an MS syringe to inoculate them? If so...how many cc's? Thanks in advance.

you would be much better off with one, prepping the grains yourself, and two, putting MS spores to agar first, then clean up on agar, then to grains. plus DIY will cost much less.

To answer your question, yes it can be done this way (but be prepared to spend more money than if you were to do it yourself).  I've done it this way before and the results were just fine.  Rye bags from vendors are generally pre prepped to have the moisture content balanced so try not to use a bunch of ms solution.  .5 cc in each corner of the bag is plenty of you're using good spores.    That's my opinion.

Inoculate grains within 24 hours of sterilization at most 48. Shipping defeats the purpose of buying pre sterilized grain. It's a noob trap, don't waist your money

Damn...I'm glad you told me...I was just going to do it for the convenience. What's the the most fool proof way to prep rye?

..Wrong, I had pre sterile rye bags I bought from a supplier, delivered via truck. Then I had to go away for work for 6+ months, left them in storage. After that they were delivered via train to a new state where I innoc'd them via a MS syringe.

Both turned out fine and 0 contams.

then that is some amazing luck. what he said still stands true. just because it worked for you, doesnt change anything.

this kind of argument comes up all the time, "well, i did it and it was fine"... thats great! but that doesnt mean it disproves what was said.

also you say it "turned out fine, with 0 contams".. but i bet there were tons of bacteria, at the very least, which affected your yield.

I've seen fruits grow in a trash can. Doesn't mean you'll see the trash TEK any time soon...

using spores to inoculate grain spawn is ok, but its hit or miss. Sometimes it can take up to 3 weeks to germinate and by then there may already be some contamination. It is very possible, but definitely not worth trying on expensive vendor spawn. If you are going to use vendor spawn, then find or make a culture. but if you can only get spores, then make your own spawn.

Yeah I understand what you're saying but there seems to be alot of people with cut and dry answers to stuff and trying to shed some light on the fact it isnt so cut and dry.

there is a few mutants on the substrate, and it was slower than expected time to fruit, but for about 8 or so month old bags it worked which was acceptable in my books lol.

a friends got 2x what grain bags innoc'd with MS and will soon have 2x bags with agar to see the difference

well first of all, this wont be any evidence of anything, since he is using MS.. the genetics can be so different that that alone can cause major differences.

but, its a fact that DIY costs less money, and is more reliable than premade, expensive, vendor stuff. that's why we advise new people to go that route, so they dont waste time and money, just to possibly fail miserably, and quit the hobby altogether from getting discouraged.

Sometimes you just gotta experience stuff for yourself roidy.  For somebody brand new at growing, ordering a bag from a trusted vendor is ok to try things out.  However, it's expensive, and not generally recommended, but it's doable, especially for somebody new at it and want to simply try their hand at it.

The great thing is, after your first successful grow, you can learn how to do things like make spore prints from your crop, different spawn and substrates to use, how to make liquid cultures and agar isolates.  It's all about tweaking your methods and perfecting your technique to get bigger yields and some fun times.

Good luck!

i just really dont see the point, if you have this information at this point.. i wish i had found the shroomery before i bought my first premade bullshit! because DIY is SO much cheaper, and more reliable. so i just fail to see the reason you would EVER suggest someone to do it? i just can not fathom it. there is literally NO excuse worthy of it.

bottom line, do whatever you want. no one here is going to come to your house and make you DIY. so so what you want. but im telling you right now, and i know most other people here will agree, that DIY is the way to go. not to mention it isnt hard.. like, maybe if DIY was SUPER complicated or something, and costs the same price, then MAYBE it would be a good excuse to buy some premade stuff, maybe.

but since this isnt the case, it's just a no-brainer. but like i said, you have to make the decision for yourself. im just trying to give you the best advice i can. so good luck.
