Gameboy Color or Advance?
    #23437063 - 07/13/16 06:17 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Ok so this new Pokemon Go fad has made me more interested in playing the old Pokemon games, either yellow, red, or blue on gameboy color

I've been shopping online and I've noticed that Gameboy advance has backwards compatibility with gameboy color games. I never had a gameboy advance, so I hear the screen is a lot more bright on it? Does that work for gameboy color games or do they stay dark?

Thanks for any info!

Gameboy Advance itself did not have a brighter screen.
Gameboy Advance SP was the first to have a backlit screen.
Seem to recall the backlight working in all instances, but never personally had the SP version, and cannot say for 100% certain that I recall my friends using the backlight for old games.
Fairly certain the light was simply a hardware-based switch though.

In the Gameboy Colour and first-gen Gameboy Advance days we were using worm lights:

Hell, still have my old original Gameboy with a Lightboy setup somewhere.
Owning an oldschool gameboy and playing on buses or at night was a mess without them.

Biggest disadvantage of the Advance over an old Colour unit is that the old school cartridges were 2-3 times taller than the Advance cartridges, so if you get an SP you're going to have the game sticking awkwardly out of the bottom all the time.

Which may annoy you with the old games.
Otherwise, the backlight was a pretty big deal.

GBA was backwards compatible with gbc games, and I think it was back lit screen for both. If I remember right the gbc games were just as bright and had unique borders for their games. That might just be the super Gameboy attachment for SNES though.

Who remembers the Sega nomad?

Pretty sure the unique borders for games was limited to the Super Gameboy on SNES.
Think that the GBA simply had the option to stretch GBC games to fit the larger screen.

Pokémon Red and Blue pre-dated the Gameboy Colour, so on GBC they get a washover effect that just kind of tints the whole game different colours.
GBC also had a neat feature where pre-GBC games could have their tint altered by holding down different buttons while booting up the system; I did a lot of playing in photo negative.

Pokémon Gold/Silver was done as a GBC title, so it had a proper colour palette.

Remember always wanting a Nomad but never getting one -- do also remember Game Gear though.
Actually kind of hard to believe that it took Nintendo so long after the Game Gear to put a backlight in their screens.

Really? I cant believe I never knew about varying tints on OG GB games. I had 2 GBCs over time.

Pokemon yellow was a true GBC game as well. I never played gold or silver much. I think I started one briefly, but that was when I was growing into a rebelious punk-ass and fell out of that kind of thing for a while.

Yea Sega was always so ahead of its time with everything they ever did. Its crazy they managed to fall off. Bad marketing. The gamegear was fuckin ill for 1991 (?) and nintendo didnt match it technology-wise for another 8 years or so. then the Nomad which was a handheld sega genesis.. wtf thats sick

Cannot remember how I first found out about it, probably an issue of Nintendo Power or something.
Only had one GBC and one GBA, but both of them were the translucent launch purples.

Googled it to see if I could find an article or anything, came across the chart

from https://www.reddit.com/r/nintendo/comments/43hzdo/til_the_color_palette_of_the_game_boy_color_can/

Comments in the thread say that it apparently worked on GBA and SP as well, but I never even tried with mine.

I am pretty sure that the gba couldnt play OG gameboy games, only GBC games. or did it switch the colors for gbc and gba games? that would be trippy.

I had the old brick sized grey gameboy and then i got the same translucent purple gbc and eventually got the solid purple (gamecube color) gba. I never had an sp. it was just a different shaped gba right? I got a ds when it came out and i love my 3ds. ya im a fanboy

SP was the first one that had the backlight, it was the flip-top GBA

I had a DS shortly after launch, then ended up picking up a DS Lite for Pokémon Diamond, but I have never got around to picking up a 3DS.  I totally missed out on Black and White, and it broke my trend of keeping up with all of them.
May pick up a new 3DS and Moon this November, but it comes out something like a week after Dishonored 2, so am not certain I will get to it.

Around Ruby/Sapphire/Fire Red/Leaf Green was when the series started causing me issues though -- the micromanaging stats and EV training and everything was such a pain, but I had to do it to be the very best.
Also Shiny farming, oh lord the pattern dancing of Shiny farming.

yea dude, I only played the 1st gen. I bought white for 3ds 15 years later lol and it is so advanced I had no idea what was going on there is so many different ways to train your pokemon all that shit you mentioned.. yea It hit me like a confusion anvil. Ill prolly still pick up sun/moon and give it a shot.

RE: SP ok thats the first backlit nintendo handheld. I was thinking the first gba was backlit. there is no excuse for them to not have, except that they knew in 2 years they were gonna sell the SP and everyone will buy that. They piss me off. I waited to buy a 3ds because i new a better one would come out shortly afterwards, so when the 3ds xl came out I swooped it. Now they have the new 3ds and 2ds and I want the new 3ds. i heard there are a couple 3ds games only compatible for new 3ds. I forget what, it could just be some features or something.

Order one of these and you'll have every snaes, GBA, GBC, genesis game ever made on one device. The screen is much better too.
