ID request for Panaeolus and Pholiotina cyanopus perhaps / Finland
    #23432295 - 07/11/16 02:44 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hello! I keep finding these small Panaeolus or Panaeolina mushrooms amongst foes on my front lawn. These feel somehow sturdier than the assumed foes I've been also picking and printing. The gill color and spacing seems also off and as I've watched their life, I've noticed the gills never drop below the cap margin and the cap margin stays curved in. Spore print is dark, purple-black to my eye. Smell isn't too unpleasant in my opinion, smells magical somehow. I don't know, maybe they're just foes, maybe something else.

Lonely cinctulus.

One of these Conocybes or Pholiotinas looks also a bit interesting. All printed cinnamon color.

I like your tentative observations. C. velutipes is expected in Finland but Funga Nordica adds DD for data defficient. We can try looking at spores.

Panaeolus and Panaeolina often grow side by side, this has led to people thinking that Panaeolina are active, but it's just from mixed collections of the two, with Panaeolus being the only active genus.

Your prints look good for Panaeolus, looks jet black to me, you can make a small mark with a black sharpie and compare the color if you find that more helpful, I know some people do.

Yes, Panaeolus have sturdier stems than Panaeolina, with Pan foes having brittle, silky white stems, and Pan cincts having reddish brown stems which are sturdy, often staining reddish/brown.

Cheers! Yea I've been thinking Conocybe velutipes as a contender and these Conocybes feel and look macroscopically different from the assumed Pholiotina cyanopus I've found in the past.

Not a lot of photos around for comparison and I don't have access to microscopy, but if someone wants to help I can try to send some specimens.
I threw these Conocybes back to my front yard. They fruited also last year and after a year of lawn mowing, they fruited in a greater numbers this year.
So, hopefully more to come.

About the possible Panaeolus, I'm fairly confident of the purplish tone in the spore print while printing. It looks blackish now though.. Go figure.

I think this pin has a chance of being Pholiotina cyanopus or something similiar. Macroscopically matches the pins I found a couple of years ago.
I Think I have two different species on my previous Conocybe photos, this pin was found exactly on the same spot on my lawn as the bell shaped one with a subtle bluing(?) going on at the base of the stem. Hopefully I'll get to see what'll it becomes.

velho, if you wanted to send something over some time I'll gladly take a look. I invite more-reliable-with-such-offers TIs to offer same because my equipment and me are all a bit unreliable (but I do do it right sooner or later).

You have some Panaeolus cinctulus there, but could also be a couple of foes in your hand.

I think it's Conocybe tenera

This is what became of the pin. Pholiotina cyanopus I presume, on my front yard again!

And to think of it this is a different yard than I did my previous finds two years ago, about 100km to southwest. Awesome!

Yea think I'm gonna do some lottery this week hehe.

Here's a couple of lawn cinctulus from this morning. I have a strong feeling that three ones with a twisting reddish stipes on the right are gonna print black and the two lighter ones on the left are the same mystery Panaeolus/Panaeolina I found before and not gonna print jet black. Printing in progress.

The middle photo is a school book example of foenisecii vs. cinctulus

A couple of more from today and the prints were black for the three one in earlier photo.

The two Panaeolinas from earlier photos.

Great start for the season anyhow!
