TL;DR incoming. read on if you wish.
i'm on the final stretch of my undergrad. i was laid off in may from a position that i was in for a little over four years. it wasn't great pay-wise, but i took away a lot of good experience to add to my prior work experience and formal education. as far as my resume goes, i look awesome on paper.
so i get my first bite on my resume from a business that is around the corner from me. the position seems like fairly easy work. it would be small raise for now, but there is a distinct possibility of moving into a much higher paying position that i'm told i would be perfect for within the next six months. they're also working with my class schedule. the environment is super casual. and as a group, they all seem like very nice people i'd fit in with. all in all, it seems like it would be a pretty good fit, at least for now.
this week i nailed two interviews with this business, and yesterday i was offered a job that i accepted. then they start processing me through HR. when i applied, i was asked if i had been convicted of any felonies in the past 7 years. i haven't, so i answered 'no' honestly. but i have nonviolent drug felonies from when i was a teen that are almost 20 years old.
i disclosed this information to HR just to make sure everything is on the up and up with my job offer. she tells me not to panic and that if the convictions show up she will speak with their parent company in california, which is apparently in san francisco. as it turns out, if i'm reading the paperwork correctly, the company i'm (hopefully) joining is within the jurisdiction of a san franscisco city ordinance that prohibits employers from using any criminal history older than 7 years in making hiring decisions.
i'm about 95% certain the job is in the bag for me. i have good references, good work history, and my convictions are older than some of their employees. i just hate feeling like i'm never going to overcome my past. yesterday, when i was down on myself, i felt like i wasn't a stakeholder in my own society.
and as far as i'm concerned, that debt has been long paid. i took my lumps and grew into a productive member of society. i can't believe i'm entering middle age and having to worry about stuff i did as a teenager, especially over what might turn out to be a temporary source of income while i get through my last bit of university.
kids - stay the fuck out of the legal system so you don't ever have to worry about this bullshit.

I hope you get the job. Hopefully, they'll overlook your youthful indiscretions.

i'm 38; the convictions were from when i was 19.
there is some progress on the issue. the san francisco ordinance seems like a step in the right direction. there's also a national "ban the box" movement to keep criminal history from being a blanket disqualifier for applicants with old convictions. of course my wonderful state government has yet to become one of the states that participates in "ban the box", lol. but i do think the culture is changing with respect to the harms of over-criminalization, especially with nonviolent drug convictions.
we'll see i guess. thanks for the support guys.

in any case, you were open and honest. you did what you could. if hr's hands are tied behind their back so be it. i would keep applying to jobs just in case. tough to say with a california based company is in charge. they do some wack ass shit.

Yeah, it truly sucks the way they treat ex-cons here in the US. They get out and are turned down even for the most menial job and have to turn back to crime to survive. And then they wonder why there's so much recidivism in our jails and prisons.

i just don't see how it benefits anyone to have things this way. i realize that some people shouldn't be trusted in some positions. but it should all be case-by-case. and it doesn't stop with jobs. there are some property companies that i will never be eligible to lease through unless they change the laws. locking people out of society en masse forever seems to only worsen what is already a terrible humanitarian crisis happening on american soil for decades now.

when i was a hiring manager, i used to love hiring ex cons.. they always did a damned fine job.
but i wasnt bound to corporate bullshit. and i dont think its fair to anybody to have to deal with an hr corporation that is bound to different state laws and have them applied.. that is some bullshit.

I'm pullin for ya, Millzy! I'm really not liking the way the job market is going in terms of invasive involvement in employees and potential employees lives, I understand that it makes sense for the company, but this culture of pre-employment driving record checks, credit checks, etc etc etc...it just doesn't sit well with me. I spoke with a recruiter recently who had been in the biz for a while, and told me how terrible things had gotten for job seekers in the last 10-20 years. This combined with massive amounts of student debt, wages that haven't kept up with inflation(http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/10/09/for-most-workers-real-wages-have-barely-budged-for-decades/)...it's all a big ol pile of shit.
On another note our legal system is also disgusting, and it makes me sick to think about it really - whole thing is set up to keep people tied into it as long as possible, bleed them dry with fines and draconian sentences and rules - if you have means you can usually get out of the cycle faster, but man, poor people just end up completely fucked.
Then when you're done and you've paid your debt to society you still have to live with it over your head, trying to find a job, a place to live, not being able to vote. There are some people who do terrible things who deserve this, but goddamn, the amount of lives ruined by the war on drugs and how little it makes sense in the ways of improving society is mind boggling - of course, if you follow the money, it all makes complete sense.

The war on drugs is this silly. It's immature. This is what our people are subject to by our Government. Silliness. Immaturity.
I wish I could pry the power of drug control right out of their hands.

Fear not. The tide is slowly turning. Why, no less than 8 states will be voting on Marijuana legalization next November.

I wish I had a crystal ball I could gaze into and tell you the future, but I don't, so I dunno. As one of the older people around here, I recall a time when these sorts of things weren't even considered in polite company, let alone being on a ballot.

i guess that came across wrong. i kinda think that maybe 2 or 3 max will pass it, but 8 on the ballot is progress regardless.

It really doesn't though, fucking over your entire society to make a quick buck, make very little sense. Everyone's quality of life goes down, bottom to top.

It wouldn't do much good if they're too dumb to figure it out themselves.
Burning the forest down around you to make a quick buck, it should be self-explanatory.
