Mushrooms stopped growing, should I pick them?
    #23440130 - 07/14/16 07:37 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hey everyone,

this is my first post on this forum and I thought I better ask before doing something wrong.

So I have a Golden Teacher growkit, already harvested the first flush a while ago (although a bit too late because I was in Amsterdam when it was the perfect time to pick them).

I am now on my second flush and yesterday I picked 5 mushrooms growing on the sides that were already really big while the rest is still not very mature as you can see on the picture.

The thing is they haven't grown at all for about two days now and I am not sure what I should do, as I have read both that I should pick them and start a new flush, as well as letting a bit of fresh air in the plastic bag because they might "explode" again.
I moisten about every three days but I usually don't let them breathe although I am not sure if this is necessary?

The white coating around the mushrooms that usually covers the whole mushroom after a while has also stopped growing and on two mushrooms there is a green spot on that coating (bottom left corner), could that be mold? Though the whole cake doesn't really look contaminated to me and doesn't smell bad either.

Did the 5 big shrooms that I picked maybe drain all the "power" out of the substrate causing it to abort the smaller ones, so should I just start a new flush?
Or is there anything I can do to that will make them grow again?

Thanks in advance,

David

Hard to tell from the picture but some of those have aborted (the caps that are turning black). Grow kits usually do not put out good flushes, it could have been sitting in a warehouse for who knows how long.

Please remember that mushrooms need fresh air just like you do. If you keep them in a bag they are suffocating, and low air exchange will promote contaminants as well (although I don't see the green spot in the pic). The fuzziness all over your mushrooms is evidence they are not getting enough fresh air.

Those all choked to death. That's actually a great pic of why them bags are not an acceptable fruiting chamber. Should post that in the grow kits suck thread.

So what would you suggest me to do? Pick them I assume?

And after I start the next flush, how can I make sure they get enough air? Would hand-fanning fresh air into the bag once a day be enough or how do I do that?

You can make a proper fruiting chamber that won't restrict air and starve them to death. Then put the tray in that, and put the bag in the trash.

Yeah you should pick the ones that aborted (black caps) you might be able to get some extra growth on the others if they had a proper fruiting chamber.

Thanks for your reply, I will try building a chamber like that when I have more time to read about it since I don't know anything about it at the moment but I will just try to save my cake by picking the aborts and opening the bag several times a day until I have a better solution.

Would you suggest harvesting all and setting up a new flush or just the aborts and leave the rest to grow?

I would put the tray inside a tub with a decent air volume.  That way you can do fewer manual air exchanges per day.  Skip the bag. Humidity dome (like a microwave plate cover) can be used in a pinch

SGFC or monotub design are solid Teks to build for the next project

Lol.. hand fanning once a day for fresh air.

What if you were locked in an airtight box just a little bigger than you, and all you got to breathe all day was when the lid was opened for 10 seconds and somebody fanned some fresh air in there.

No one said airtight :p

Takes a while to exchange a cubic meter of air for a small lifeform.  Temporary measures until the proper methods are in place

Okay but just imagine some weird higher organism is saying those things about you in the box/bag while you suffocate, drawling on about how they did their "research" about your needs and thought this was the right way to do.

Vented covers work quite well for GE + maintaining humidity.  Just not optimal FAE

From where he is now, almost anything is a step up.  You seem to be inferring more than I'm writing however.

Cheers :toast:

Thought I'd update you guys after a month:
I harvested all mushrooms and soaked the substrate, placed it in the bag again but I fanned fresh air into the bag with a hand fan for like 30 seconds once a day and the result was I got two more medium flushes (~15g dried) out of the kit, maybe I'll get another one.

What I want to say is that while everyone in here said these kits are bad, and building a fruiting chamber and doing everything else yourself might definitely be better, the grow kit I have used is really a good alternative for people who don't have a lot of time but just want mushrooms in no time.

I will probably look into doing everything myself at some point when I have more time to read into the whole science of mushroom colonization but for quick results without any effort these kits are really good in my opinion, and I believe 40€ for a kit of that size were well spent.

I spent $0.05 in materials per container and about 3 hours total including the sterilization run on these.

Thread needed more pics.

It's hard to find a piece of gum for that much now-a-days.

Pasty's over here growing 70 grams of fuckin' sno-caps on a nickel.

Eh my cost per project is pretty similar.  I haven't bought supplies in months, and last time I did, it was all pretty cheap.  I don't get yields like pasty so often, but the value is still there.
