Should I read the source material first, or continue the film? I'm about 10 minutes into it now, but this question occurred to me and I thought I'd take suggestions.
I love Johnny Depp and don't think he'd mess up an adaptation, but some might disagree.

Johnny Depp worked on the set with Hunter S thompson and had tons of time to go over the script he's also in rum diaries which is another one but I don't know if hunter was alive when that came out
johnny depp has essentially played the role besides being in the body of the man himself

Ahh, excellent! I had good faith on this, glad to know they pulled it off! In light of that, the trip continues!
In the meantime, everyone feel free to spin this into a thread on psychedelic literature, or derail it completely

I feel bill murrays potrayal of hunter s thompson in where the buffalo roam was a better mimic of the speech patterns and mannerisms of the real hunter s thompson...

I think it's a perfect adaptation, personally. I actually like the movie a bit more than the book. There's very little that the movie leaves out and it's a masterpiece of psychedelic psycho film. (I just made up that expression, literally just to describe this movie)

Was just coming in to say that, fear and loathing is very overrated IMO of course.
They are almost exactly the same movie in many ways aside from the cast and era they were made.
Where The Buffalo Roam is all around a much chiller movie though and doesn't have the dark intensity that is present in many parts of Fear n Loathing

Where the Wild Buffalo Roam? Your crazy, so many parts of the plot for Fear and Loathing are almost identical
I will admit the pace/ style is much different/ slower but that is what makes it superior IMO, its more artsy/ philosophical and less dramatic
Fear and Loathing as strong themes of, well, fear and loathing. Where as Where The Buffalo Roam is more about truly living a free life in "the land of the free."
So to speak at least, clearly that is all just my take on it. Both are great movies in their own way.

I just really like the style of Fear & Loathing. I love how watching it almost feels like a cartoon... there's no movie that I'm aware of that has the same style, it's totally unique. And, Johnny Depp's delivery is classic.
To be fair, I might feel differently if I'd seen Where The Buffalo Roam first. But, it just struck me as very buttoned-down compared to the truly manic energy of Depp's go.

You have to remember it is the other way around though, Fear and Loathing is really just a more manic version of where the buffalo roam.
And while fear and loathing may have more modern trippy visuals I feel like the first film has a more generally trippy style/ plot.
A lot of random examples come to mind but I don't want to spoil and funny parts for people who have yet to watch it.

It didn't strike me as being at all trippy, but I only saw it once a while ago, maybe I'll have to watch it again.

Totally agree one thousand percent. I thought it was a fuckin masterpiece, personally. I've literally probably seen it 150 times from start to finish, and I swear, it has never gotten old to me.
Quite frankly I'm one of the biggest F&L nerds you'll ever meet.

My girlfriend got me the hard cover copy of the book and i bought a whole collection of movies based are drugs and drug culture and some hunter s thompson books felt like an extended christmas.
Fear and loathing is my go to movie to just turn on while i do what ever just for background noise. Such a good film

I used to fit it in to nearly every single psych trip. Either on the come up or the come down.
(watching it on the come down is optimal btw)

It isn't visually trippy like fear and loathing but the plot and movie itself feel more psychedelic to me if that makes any sense
Also I feel like the drug use is much less dramatized as is the whole movie in general really for the most part.

I love how dramatized the drug use is though, it's hilarious. I loved the adrenochrome scene. BEAUTIFUL FUCKING TITS
