ID for this giant mushroom
#23437427 - 07/13/16 09:26 AM (7 years, 6 months ago) |

Habitat: Where does it grow? mixed hardwood and hemlock woods
What does it grow on? Tree stump. I believe it was hemlock but the stump was pretty far gone to be sure
Gills: Creamy colored, attached
Stem: Short, thick and velvety brown
Cap: 6 1/2" creamy yellow to brown, slightly shaggy toward center
Spore print color: N/A yet
Bruising: Gills bruise brown
It smells good. Kind of hard to describe. A little sweet and smokey.
Any help with the ID would be appreciated. I've been foraging mushrooms for years and this is the first time coming across this one. At first I was thinking Tricholoma species but I haven't been able to nail it down. Thanks!

Interesting. A gilled boletalus. That explains why I was having trouble tracking it down. Too bad it isn't edible.
Looks like it was re-classified in 1992 after being found to be saprobic.
TYVM!

I like mushroom observer as well. Have you checked out the "Morphing Mushroom Identifier" at MycoKeys? Sometimes it seems like it can be too specific with the color choices but I've found it pretty useful. I don't know if it's bad form to post the link but a search will find it easily.
I'm familiar with many of the edible species in my area. Especially the ones with few look-alikes, but sometimes I come on something that stumps me.
Just got back from a quick forage with these beauties It's the first flush of them with many pins just visible. Found a good amount of lobster shrooms yesterday.
