GYMNOPILUS vs GALERINA

I was confident enought about the genus gymnopilus that i will be hunting for in the next few days UNTIL i found out about galerinas. I made some research and i couldnt find any consistent info about the difference between gymnopilus and some galerina species (poisonous some even deadly). So this got me really worried the only way i think to differenciate them is by the taste (bitter for gyms and idk for galerina can someone tell me?) And also gyms have scaly caps and gals dont. BUT i really wont be relying on so little information for the risk of killing myself. Spore print is said to be same color. Size is very unreliable (you can find small gyms) Some said they found gyms with soft caps. I really dont want to end up dead or start tripping and thinking that im going to die because i will be doubting my id of the mushroom i ate 30min ago when in this state of mind. So what can i do (macroscopically) to differenciate gyms from a deadly galerina. Thanks for the help

Yeah...that's why I don't mess with small gyms. The only one i would consider trying are the big laughing gyms...even then, I would look for bluing.

Galerina have a light brown spore print. Gymnopilus can be rusty, but distinctly orange. Dig them out of the wood a little (take pictures first) to see if there are any green aborts or signs of bruising at the base. Just make sure to keep your collections separate and with notes... post pics on the Shroomery before you eat anything! Gyms are gems!

I will surely post pics but i will eat them fresh i dont have a lot of time so i will need fast ID if i ever found any and from all the posts i saw they were all hesitant and saying that its a risk or idk. But is the sporeprint a really good difference or it can be very variating for those mushrooms (expl: gyms having a brownish sporeprint or not very orange or galerinas having a kind of orange spores) or it wont happen? And also are gyms generally rare to find? (Any kind of active gym)

all the Gymnopilus i've seen have been wayyyy beefier than the Galerinas i've seen even if they're similar in height/length. the pileus and stipes are thicker & have different textures & ornamentation and the caps develop differently. gyms are just straight up meatier at all stages of development. Galerinas are often fragile little things.
and gyms often grow in clusters whereas i haven't seen a cluster of Galerina in person. i've seen many on the same log, yeah, but not a true cluster.
get out there and collect some mushrooms. i think you'll see that they just aren't very similar macroscopically speaking.

I think Galerina and Gymnopilus have the same color spore prints.
Galerina won't be bitter like Gymnopilus are, and have smoother caps.

Galerinas have no distinct taste/smell, just slightly mushroomy.
Most Gymnopilus species are bitter bit not all.
The maximum cap size on Galerina is 4 cm, so stick to species which are larger than that - or have red squamules on the top of the cap.

Not as big as many Gymnopilus - the description of Galerina marginata on Mushroomexpert starts off with: Cap: 1.5-5 cm (rarely up to 8 cm)
Also, Galerina always has a smooth cap and Gymnopilus often has a squamulose / fibrous cap.

I found these spread out in a field while walking my dog. Could someone please help me identify them?

They were probably dry because most are bitter, but then again I haven't tasted all types of Gyms only a few. Like Alan said look at the caps surface. Gyms are usually rough & have different shape caps while the Galarina has a smoothe cap & they are usually all round. With all that said just save the ones you think are good candidate for Gyms, take pics, and post on here to get a pos. I.D. Good Luck out there hunting. Once you start picking them you will know them forever I'm sure. Peace & Love
