how do you get a gun?
    #23436946 - 07/13/16 04:41 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Almost all the shootings around the guns involved were obtained illegally. How does something like this happen? I would think the gun store requires some type of weapon license (kinda like license to prove you're old enough to smoke or drink). Isn't it wiser to obtain a gun legally with a license for self protection? I'd think in the court of law, if you ended up having the need to use a gun to protect your self, you get the upper hand?

I could google about how to obtain a gun license but does anyone here know how the whole process goes and if it's as easy as getting a driver's license (even this one can be a pain to some).

it differs from state to state. there is no cookie-cutter response.

In my state, unless you go through a dealer, you don't have to register a firearm or get a background check.

You don't get it, people that buy the guns legally sell them for a profit to people that can't get them legally.

Most of the buyers have criminal records, they don't follow any laws, including gun laws.

Pretty sure in Texas my boy told me you can buy them at Gun Shows with nothing to link it back to you. No need to show them your firearm license.

In most American states you can legally conduct a private sale or purchase of a firearm with no paperwork or background check.  Of course there are some exceptions.  A lot of websites cater to the private sale of firearms like armslist and backpage.

You can also purchase a gun from most sporting good stores, and even WalMart in most states, dedicated gun stores will have a better selection.  When buying from a store they will have a record of the sale and a background check is required (it only takes a couple minutes most of the time)

Gun shows have the common misconception of selling guns without background checks.  This is possible if you enter into an agreement for a private sale at a gunshow.  The reality is, most guns at shows are sold by dealers these days, and dealers still have to do a background check.  They usually call it in on a cell phone, and you can take the gun home with you from the gun show.

You can easily figure out your state laws with online searches or by calling a local gun store, they would probably be happy to talk your ear off about it.

Guns are expensive, so is ammunition, you also have to consider range fees and ammunition limitations if you are city bound and don't have anywhere to practice.

In my city it's a simple matter of money. For about $20 sometimes even less, you can buy a working pistol with at least a few bullets included.

Buying a gun off the street like that will most certainly be a stolen firearm that has likely never been registered and possibly not even reported as stolen.

It's amazing to me the vast difference between cities in America when it comes to buying and/or selling of firearms on the black/grey markets.  I probably live in one of the cheapest and most convenient places in the world to purchase an unlicensed firearm. Is it any coincidence that my city is constantly one of the most violent cities in America?

I believe it is the violence that predicates the market  but there is no way of being certain it's not other way around.

The NRA is going to come after you for even hinting there is a relationship between gun violence and gun availability.

All the gun stores and dealers do is call a database (NCIC) hotline, give them your name DOB and SSN. They say they don't keep the info on file in a registry, but do you believe this... Anyway, they see if you're a felon, or other person who cannot own a gun legally, other than that it's just like buying anything else. For PTP sales, it's a simple manner of trade like anything else. As for the people who aren't legally allowed they get them the same way they get illicit drugs- the black market. Anyway, if you're a felon with a gun, it's an automatic 5 years in a federal pen just for the gun (and each bullet if they want to be dickheads), makes it an automatic federal case, and it usually doubles the time you do with other cases so you better have a REALLY good reason to have it and be mentally prepared to use it if need be. Save the last bullet for yourself.

Wouldn't this process link the weapon back to you ?

I don't trust this dollar store gun buying route because when it comes to emergency of having need to use it how do you know it even works? What's the cheapest gun available? One poster here said a buyer who legally buys the gun who then sells the gun to an individual is another route. Wouldn't the legal owner of the gun be scrutinized for this should the weapon ever be found involved in a crime?

My real intent is for protection and to get the upper hand in court should there be a reason to use it.

I may need to get a gun magazine to get to the gist of owning a gun. I read something about an insurance and is this for just in case I shoot someone and I get sued because of an injury or death? What if it was self defense doesn't that mean I can counter sue?

what the hell have you been reading man?

here is what you do. you go take a firearms class, then ask the instructor about all the nuaces about laws in your area. after the class if you feel comfortable enough, go to a range and feel out some different firearms.

once you feel comfortable enough, buy one.

You go to armslist.com or any of the other gun craigslists out there and find one.
