Good tip for anyone using a heat pad to incubate
    #2343593 - 02/16/04 11:55 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I had alot of extra polyfill left over from when i made my last set of jars. Ive been using a heatpad for incubation because ive been too lazy to buy the materials needed for the tub in tub. But for anyone using a heatpad out there i totally recommend you go to an arts and crafts store and pick up a big bag of polyfill (its used to make pillows) for about $2. Put your heat pad under the container you will have your jars in, lay down a layer of polyfill, set your jars on top, then put polyfill in between the jars and around them. The polyfill keeps the heat in so that even on the lowest setting the average heat is in the high 80's. Hope this helps!

Thats a pretty good idea man, Ive been using a towel to help control the heat but polyfill might be worth a shot!

i was thinking of using a heating pad to keep my fruiting chambers at a high enough temperature. i am using rubbermaid containers in a large army chest in my closet and i was just going to set the pad inside the chest to bump up the temp (ambient temp. is in the low 60s) but im a little concerned about creating a fire hazard.

I keep a seedling heater pad in the bottom of my indoor greenhouse, I just keep it at 75 to bring up the temps in these cold winters.

For an incubator I use a Tub in tub. The whole tub in tub with all the parts cost me $34, and it holds about 60-70 QT jars, it's HUGE.

To continue:

Does anyone know of a good way to use a heating pad to keep the terrarium consistently warm? I find that the temperature seems to fluctuate too much. Don't have the materials or money for aquarium heater & two rubbermaids right now (and yes, I know it's cheap, but when you have negative money, that's expensive).

Usually, room temp is OK for a terrarium. People and cubes operate nicely in the same temp window.

I use a small reptile heater pad $25, and a 10 gallon glass tank $11.
I have nothing to show for it YET!.. But I think I have it togeather..

The larger $44 heater pad will cover the bottem of the 10 gallon tank,
But I was unsure if this would be any good. I figure the more cakes, caseings I have in my tank the higher the temp will be... And with one caseing the warmth of the small pad is just enough, To many could make the tank too hot!
