I used to be an avid lucid dreamer. I experienced it for years before I knew there was even a name for it. As soon as I realize its a dream I  usually wake up. Every now and then I stay under and am able to take control...I mostly fly. Sometimes Im able to "connect" to other dreams Ive had where I can tap in and continue where I left off and remember everything like I never skipped a beat. Its usually like skipping a stone on water though. I dip in and out..my brain kinda panics and I wake up.

I actually havent experienced it in a while...

Ive never had a method. It just happens and Ive never had any control over it. My dream state has a very particular feel and Im instantly able to realize it. Once I do, I either instantly wake up or Im able to take control and do whatever. Its like entering a cheat code. The game just kinda falls apart and does what I will it to

Edit

Actually, the last time was maybe a week or so ago. Ive gotten into this new kick where I move things with my mind. Mostly just closing doors and such. It feels very real and Im certain I can do it when I wake up...but of course I cant. Still fun though.

Set an alarm for 5 hours after you lay down to go to sleep. When you lay down DO NOT under any circumstances look at a clock. When you wake up you won't know what time you actually fell asleep. Go use ths bathroom or do something small so you remember getting up earlier that morning but then go back to sleep.

When you lay back down you should be in REM which ime makes dreaming a lot easier.

The reason for not looking at a clock is that if you end up rolling in bed an hour before falling asleep you don't want to know that you did. Ignorance is bliss when it comes to sleeping and trying to get your mind in the most vulnerable state possible

Lucid dreaming is the gateway to infinite wonder, transcendent mystery and ecstatic bliss.

It is by far the most under rated and unknown skill.

If people knew what they were missing out on, they would make mastering lucid dreaming their top priority.

The experiences I have had through lucid dreaming are by far the most magnificent and unspeakably profound and wonderful of my life by far.

Through lucid dreaming I have tasted heaven and seen God.

Lucid dreaming is a miracle.

It is also only the beginning of the journey.

Once you attain lucid dreams, then you can begin mastering the even more advanced techniques of dream yoga and dream magick.

Check out this thread for an introductory guide to get you started .

I'll post the guide here for your convenience:

1. Keep a dream journal and pen by your bed. Write down all your dreams in as much detail as possible first thing every morning.

2. Set the intention to get lucid. Write down in your journal "I will have a lucid dream" ten times before bed, then focus on having a lucid dream as you fall asleep. Think to yourself "I will notice when I am dreaming. I will recognize when I fall asleep. When I am dreaming I will realize I am alseep" etc as you fall asleep.

3. Begin performing "reality checks" once every hour during your day. As yourself "am I dreaming?" sincerely consider that you may be dreaming. Perform a test to check. Tests you can use:

A. Check a clock and read the time. Then look away, and then back. Read the time again. If you are able to read the time easily both times and the time is the same, you are not dreaming.

If you are dreaming the time will be impossible to read, composed of nonsensical numbers or letters, shifting or blurring etc. And if you can read the time in a dream and look away and look back, the time will have changed.

B. Flip a light switch on and off a few times. If the light changes when you flip the switch, you are not dreaming. If it does not, you are asleep.

C. Try to push the finger of your right hand through your left palm. Will it and intend it to go through. If it does not, you are awake. If it does, you are dreaming.

Once you have made a habit of doing a reality check every hour, you will eventually do one while you are dreaming and become lucid.

4. Practice the interrupted sleep technique/ Wake back to sleep method. Set your alarm for 1-2 hours before you need to wake up. When it goes off, get out of bed, write down any dreams, go for a short walk around your house, drink a glass of water and then go back to sleep with the intention to have a lucid dream firmly in your mind.

You are most likely to have a lucid dream in the last 1-2 hours of sleep in a night, and you are exponentially more likely to have one if you practice the interupted sleep/ wake back to sleep method.

Studies show that a majority of people who practice this technique will achieve a lucid dream within a few weeks, even if no other method is used.

Combine these methods and persist and you will achieve lucid dreams.

A few considerations:

1. Some people find that nootropics (piracetam and citicoline etc) enhance dreaming.

2. Some people find that not smoking weed enhances dreaming.

3. Do not drink flouridated tap water, as flouride calcifies the pineal gland and likely impairs dreaming.

4. Practice a healthy lifestyle and do not over indulge in junk foods or alcohol etc as this may impair dreaming.

5. Calea Zetatuchi (sp?) or mexican dream herb is said to induce lucid dreams.

6. Watch the movie "Waking Life" for insights into lucid dreaming. I had my first lucid dream after watching this movie.

7. Once you learn to get Lucid, this is only the beginning. There is a whole list of more advanced dream techniques that are super amazing and can be performed when lucid.

This is "entry one" into my lucid dreaming manual. I am highly advanced in lucid dreaming and have had hundreds of lucid dreams, and have mastered several advanced lucid dream techniques. I will update this thread periodically with more tips and tricks and techniques for lucid dreaming.

Moonshoe is a level 10 dreamer. I thought the cap was at level 8.

A lot of it too is putting it up in the front of your thought so that no matter where your mind wanders off to at the last moment before sleep it's still on lucid dream.

Like think of each thought as a car on a highway. When you get hit by a car(thought) your mind will latch onto that thought and manifest a dream out of it. So put as many lucid dream cars on the highway to increase your chance of having a dream manifest out of that car (thought)

If that even makes sense?

Idk that's the best way to put how i view it. Almost any night where i can get a full 8 hours sleep in i can guarantee i have some degree of a lucid dream. I just suck at elaborating on how i get it to work for me.:shrug;

Moonshoe do you have astral projections or practice them? I've had them quite often, they seem to come hand in hand with LD.

I know some people say if you have to sleep to project it isn't really projecting. Idk what makes them say that. I see AP as a state of mind more then anything, and the dream cycle is when my mind is the most tangible and open for shaping.

Good lookin Moonshoe  waking life is my number 1 favorite movie ever. Matrix behind that haha. I like to use the wake back to bed technique. Wake after 6 hours, stay up for 30 minutes and use the mnemonic induced lucid dream technique when I got back to bed. Then use WILD when I wake up from the later dreams. Usually have at least one lucid dream every night I try this.

And during waking life I do the hand reality check: continuously ask myself "am I dreaming?" Check my surroundings and senses, then stare at my hand/fingers, look away and look back to see if my hand is still normal. Or I will just poke my hand with my finger of my opposite hand. Do this a bunch during the day, you'll definitely do it in your dreams.

Oh and dream journal is mandatory along with no smoking weed. I was prescribed elavil for ibs a couple months ago and it has made my dreams very vivid and increase likelihood for lucidity. I've heard of a few other supplements, some things in DreamLeaf? Look up its ingredients.

The western world has no idea the depth of experience and wisdom one can gain from our dreams, meditation and psychedelics.

Oh! And if anyone's looking for a good guidebook, check out "Exploring the world of lucid dreaming" by Stephen Laberge. He's the first scientist to prove in a laboratory that lucid dreaming is real. Also created the Lucidity Institute out in Hawaii I believe

I haven't had a lucid dream in a while, but I am big into remembering my dreams...

Had an interesting one the other night. I was in this high tech public porter potty and found a double perculated glass on glass bong in it lol... I got really excited and decided I would sell it ^_^ Then found myself in a mall rastafarian clothing shop, in the back was a little corner this chick was sitting in and there were images of the all seeing eye all over it, I was discussing with her how actually that symbol does not mean illuminati, it's masonic.

....When this occurs, 99% of the time I instantly think that I've just been dosed very heavily and that I'm actually tripping "in real awake life", I always go around asking people in my dreams if someone has dosed me, or where I'm at, or the date/time, basically just wanting to know WTF is going on  .

This has happened so many times.

I think that would be a bizarre thing to experience, always waking up from blank/black sleep....When ever I wake up, whether it's in the middle of the night or in the morning, I'm always waking up from a dream. I feel like I'm literally dreaming all night long. It's like I go into a completely different life/world when I go to "sleep", like I can actually draw maps of the places I've been going to in my dreams since childhood.

Hell yes!

I didn't read the posts before this, but in case it wasn't mentioned, there is an app dedicated to lucid dreaming called "Awoken" which is totally worth the 3-4 dollars.

I got into lucid dreaming because I developed an issue with sleep paralysis (with visions) in my early/mid 20s (VERY rare time to develop it, thought I had a tumor). Had some TRULY terrifying experiences, I'll post one below for fun. Learning to LD (and astral project), gave me control over these terrifying moments and turned them into something to look forward to. There is a good documentary on sleep paralysis/crazy dreaming called "The Nightmare", my experiences were as bad as the people being interviewed. That's how much learning to dream lucid has helped me.

For the record I did so mostly with reality checks. Looking at my hand is my favorite (counting my fingers) and totally trips me out every time I do it in a dream. REALLY curious that your brain is capable of creating a very convincing entire world, yet can't replicate something you see everyday.

Chemicals also helped in the beginning. I think this was mentioned, but some nootropics have an effect on dreams and any supplement that boosts choline/acetylcholine either as a precursor or inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase WILL have a dramatic effect on dreams, making them more vivid and you more likely to become lucid. Few examples of things that can effect dreams: huperazine A, Alpha-GPC, Nicotine, Melatonin, CDP-Choline, Choline bitartrate, DMAE, some B vitamins, racetams (supposedly), Centrophenoxine, Vinpocetine, etc, etc. Many of these chemicals work WONDERS on focus/memory if taken daily. Many also have symbiotic effects when taken together (e.g. an AChEI with a choline pro-drug). You can buy supplements that have a few combined (expensive), personally I like Powder City.

If you are feeling adventurous, Galantamine is readily available over the internet, but I'm not sure it's too wise to take prescription grade anti-Alzheimers drugs for recreational dreaming experiences. I had one of the most uncomfortable/downright horrific nights of my life on this stuff, could not tell reality from dreams, felt like my brain was being torn apart, horrible nightmares, etc. Check out all associated health precautions if anyone plans on trying it.

Lastly, you can learn to astral project surprisingly easy, which is FAR more rewarding than lucid dreaming imo. There are lots of methods out there from the ridiculous to ridiculously useful. I can post what worked for me if anyone is interested.

Bad sleep paralysis experience: Woke up as usual "stuck", feeling like I was suffocating, sinking, dying, typical experience. I was told to focus on moving one part of my body when this happens instead of trying desperately to jump up, but this time I couldn't even move my ankle like usual. My eyes were watching the clock tick impossibly slow when I heard a sound. I watched this beautiful naked woman walk slowly into my room and up to my bed before straddling me. These experiences are so real that I could feel the bed move under her weight, I could smell her breath (lavender), her hands on me, everything totally indistinguishable from everyday life. This obviously wasn't unpleasant until I suddenly remembered sleep paralysis is the origin of the succubus myth. Too late I tried to banish the thought and I watched this beautiful smile turn into an incredibly evil, fangy grin that spread halfway up either side of her head. Her breath changed from cherry smelling to stinking of rotten fish, I could feel the heat of it burning my cheek, her hand - which was doing something amazing - turned into claws that started tearing me to shreds (easily the worst pain I've ever felt). Mind you the whole time I knew it was a dream, but that's little comfort. Using every ounce of my will I reached up and grabbed her and threw her off while screaming at the top of my lungs (in pain and horror). I felt my hands grab her and throw her weight off of me. I blinked and she was gone. I was awake sitting up.

So yea, it was never fun. Interestingly most people develop these problems either around the ages of 5-7 or 15-17. I have no idea how a 6 year old is supposed to deal with something like that. I can almost understand where these life long alien abduction nutjobs are coming from.

When I was around 12 I had a dream in which this dark figure was following me around my house and once he got near me I realized I was dreaming and everything just kind of stopped. I didn't really know what to do from there and so I woke myself up. After that I was able to wake myself up from nightmares or stop them and change up the theme, though they never carried on for too long. I don't know if that would be considered lucid dreaming but I'm sure it's somewhere along the spectrum.

I think by definition that would be lucid dreaming. Consider yourself lucky, I have those nightmares where I KNOW I'm dreaming and that I have to wake myself up, but am unable to. I think that's pretty common actually.

When I realize I'm lucid, I almost always try to fly, maybe give that a shot next time it happens.

I can usually wake myself from a nightmare by blinking really hard and long.

Shit dude, sleep paralysis sounds terrifying. But I've also read you can easily turn that experience into a lucid dream or Astral projection. I don't know mych about AP. hiw exactly do you do that and what is it like?

I remember trying just choline bitartrate, Melatonin and B vitamins. I'm kinda skeptical about synthesized nootropics. I do like taking lions mane mushroom, green tea and reishi or chaga mushroom tea daily. Reishi mainly for physical health, buy lions mane is a sort of natural nootropic. I've only taken for a couple weeks so far though. I tried noopept once and it was Wayyyyyyyy too stimulating. I was drenched in sweat and very anxious. Similar to caffeine overdosed. But I may look onto the others for lucid dreaming.

Idk, I had a lucid dream a couple years ago where I had a conversation with Einstein. At the time I was researching different supplements for inducing lucidity so I asked him what his thoughts were on taking things to enhance lucidity. He replied, "the true path to self is one found naturally."

I had a fucking gnarly sleep paralysis like 2 years ago. Maybe 1.5. Hard to say...

Anyways, I was just in my fucking bed, you know? And all of a sudden, I felt this sort of ectoplasmic entity touching my body. I couldn't move too well, I was basically paralyzed although I could kinda move slowly. It was like this ghost entity, and it whisphered in my ear "aye aye, motherfucker." Was really strange, felt crazy that this thing could enter my room, like I was defenseless. I also remember jumping up at some point and shouting 'who's there?!!?!?"

It was really weird but in retrospect, it was a pretty cool dream
