My First - PF Tek Cambodian
    #23435479 - 07/12/16 05:00 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

First post here! Long time reader and friend of the Shroomery.

Been using the magical fungi just about every weekend for the past 6 months. Figured it was about time for a wolf to start growing his own.

Ordered four syringes, three Cambodian and one B+ from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Came quick, good packaging, perfect. Will definitely be using them again.

Not really knowing any better, ordered a grow kit online, not realizing that it was pretty unnecessary, as purchasing all of the necessary paraphernalia piece-meal at various stores would have been just as easy and probably less expensive.  Still, it provided twelve half-pint jars, already sterilized and ready to go, which was great for me considering I do not have a method for sterilization.

After multiple attempts at getting the company's poorly designed tub-in-tub incubation chamber to maintain a solid temperature, gave up on this method completely and opted to just store the jars underneath a dresser in the corner of the bedroom.

Purchased a small, personal oven, about $40. Completely sterilized oven using Lysol. Inoculated all twelve jars inside of the oven, one at a time, both uncovering and recovering them from their aluminum shields inside the oven. Ended up using one and about an eighth of a syringe. I definitely went overboard on the impregnation, but this was on purpose, as it is my first time I wanted to make sure they made it.

Stored eight of the jars inside of a sterilized plastic container with the cover ajar, and the other four in the open, on the floor. Want to see how the floor temperature affects growth, if at all. The temperatures in the room have been fluctuating between 75-81, pretty much perfect conditions.

Today is the sixth day post-inoculation. Rhizomorphic growth in 8/12 jars.

Getting very excited. Will likely be asking the group here for suggestions when the time comes to birth them, as the methodologies I've been reading about are many, and I do not know yet which way to go.

The things you've read are at the very least 5-10 years old. No need to explain further, check his link where to begin, links, proven reliable methods etc. Spend some evenings reading and you'll get it!

Make sure where ever you take information from you check the date first of all.

A little hard to explain. Literally everything you said you did is vastly dated proven wrong or at least not efficient years ago. We're trying to combat the fact a lot of noobs tend to find the worst info possible for some reason but at least we can show where the good stuff is

I see. I've been doing lots of research and was also following the instructions doh the grow kit. Can you please explain to me what I have done wrong here so I can avoid doing the same thing again? I realize I could spend all day reading the hundreds of posts on this forum, but it would be so much more communal if you would just inform me.

Instead of the grow kit, invest in a PC if you're really serious about this hobby.
And read up on bulk growing, skip the pf tek, it's not worth the time/trouble/effort.

Lots of dust on the floor, keep it on a shelf instead.

One or two drops is all you really need, there's millions of spores in each syringe, just make sure to shake it up really good before inoculating.

Instead of this oven thing you're using, just make a SAB instead.
It's just a large plastic tote with two holes drilled on one side big enough for your hands to get through.

You want to measure floor temperature?
Just keep it on a shelf dude, at room temp (low 70s). No need to complicate things.

Once fully colonized, give em another week of consolidation, then birth (dunk for 24 hours then roll in verm).
Place in fruiting chamber. Mist them 3-4 times a day on average, fanning each time. Wait for magical mushies to pop up. Trip balls, see God. :levitate:

The pressure cooker will come later - a Wolf doesn't really see himself ordering jars all the time. That's no good.

Wish someone had told that three weeks ago! PF Tek was reportedly the easiest for a beginner. Will definitely be moving on to a bulk later if this proves successful and enjoyable.

Thought about that, too. Problem is that a wolf doesn't really have a good shelf to use for this purpose, and keeping the experiment out of leisurely view is also a must. Been considering the high shelf in my walk-in closet, but fear that temperature levels there are over 82 Celcius, which would be no good for this.

Have kept the foil on top of the jars as a precautionary measure against the aforementioned dust.

Definitely was aware that 1-2 drops was all that was necessary, but again, being first time, went for gusto instead of meticulousness. Figure that spores are cheap, so who cares?

Totally dig you on the large plastic tote, but the oven is already bought, and it seems to have been incredibly successful. Others have sworn by this oven method. Plus, this particular oven is the perfect size in which to perform this operation, and the methodology of the heat from the oven pushing away contaminants makes a lot of sense to me. Probably going to stick with this one.

lol Not the floor temperature, but because of the stone tile nature of this room, wanted to see what differences there would be between direct floor contact versus blocked contact. So far, there does not seem to be any difference whatsoever.

Done. Three jars - three of the four that are not inside of the container. Most of them look like this, minus 2-3 which are showing extremely light signs of growth. At this time, none of them are showing mold, and all are showing some kind of mycelial growth. Today being Day 7, was hoping for a little bit more progress than this, but a wolf can be patient.

More pictures as this progresses.

Been looking at the shotgun chamber tek linked in Trusted Cultivator's sig - might give that a go. Kit also came with a timed air blower - would like to utilize this somehow, as work schedule means won't be able to give as regular FAE attention as believed to be necessary (3-4 times per day?).

Unless you have another suggestion for a different chamber method?

leaving the foil on your lids
:failboat:

just stick to newer teks. why did you leave the foil? You think it's protecting anything.
yeah, it's protecting the lid from dust.
meanwhile it's compromising your dry verm layer by making it moisten with the humidity the foil's creating under it.

"spores are cheap who cares"
great attitude. unfortunately the more spores you use the greater your chances of contamination. we all try at great length to dispel all this incorrect/dated information. where are you getting this stuff from?

please no airblower unless you're making a flowhood. an SGFC works best in a room away from any walls and off the floor, with no fans running.

Where am I getting it from? Are you kidding me?

Information of all kinds is available all over the internet. Every tek variation from A to Z is out there, available, and claims to be an awesome, great, incredible and most proven way to reach success. It is incredibly difficult for a beginner to siphon through what is "right" and what is "wrong."

And then to come onto a site like this one, looking for help, only to receive this somewhat condescending attitude toward the methods which have been chosen, only makes the whole thing all the more confusing and frustrating.

Anyhow...

You are telling me that I should remove the tinfoil completely? Should I be protecting the open holes on the jar from the open air then?

Since I'm storing these jars on the floor, doesn't removing the foil lids open them up to contamination?

Don't store them on the floor then.  That's the worst place to store anything, no matter how many layers of foil or whatever else it has on it.

This would be going so much better if you just read a good tek. Here's one I personally would use for pf tek.

Yes, there is of course a metal lid underneath the foil. Come on.

Do realize that storing on the floor is not ideal, but again, don't have a lot of great options in my current situation. Have placed a thermometer in the closet to test for temperature levels, but pretty sure it's too hot here.

Just went and loosened all aluminum lids, still leaving them on top, just incredibly loose. Not sure why I'm not just removing them completely, but this is the course opted upon. Will remove them completely after more growth occurs and the mycelium is better suited to protect itself.

Read dozens of teks and boiled it down to the core information. Sterilize the jars, impregnate with cleanliness in mind, store in ambient light 75-81 degrees Celsius. I'll check out the one you've suggested, thanks!

All in all, don't really feel like it's going badly at all. When removing the foil from the other 8 jars, noticed that all of them are showing similar or more rhizomorphic growth than the three in the photo, and none are showing contamination. Is this good or normal or slow for Day 7 of an operation?

Either way, pretty glad that there's only one jar which has not burst yet, but it is also showing signs of beginning, and perhaps with some fresh air, something is yet to take place.

Will update as the days go forward. Thanks for your replies!
