Can hard cider be brewed from apple slices instead of cider?

Been reading between various "how to" articles about both apple cider vinegar and hard apple cider. Most of these recipes call for pressing the apples and using the resulting cider.
Except for some of the vinegar recipes, which use whole sliced apples submerged in sugary water. So I wonder, couldn't you just add an airlock to that recipe and brew cider without the apple press?
My apple trees are exploding this year and I'm trying to figure out what the heck to do with it all. Tiresome to sit and sift through recipes for too long, maybe somebody has a suggestion?

You could do that, but it is much more efficient to press the apples.

I just don't have access to a press. I have a household juicer
Would take forever but it should work the same I would think.

I've heard of people using juicer/processor and putting all the pulp in a voile sheet (curtains at walmart) and squeezing out all the juice. probably the cheapest way to do it. I'd say just buy a press on craigslist or kijiji. I got a massive one for like 100$ ... I think they're over a grand new.

I have personally used Apples through a juicer and made a gallon of wine. It's about 25 or 30 apples per gallon. Granny Smith is one of the best. It works! And takes a lot less time than you might think. If you included some pulp thatd work and let you use less apples. You can ferment wine with any fruit: pulp, whole, frozen, pureed, dried, jelly... Even veggies and flowers with some grape concentrate will ferment. Just filter out that pulp after your week long primary fermentation.

Oh, and if you have a decent thrift shop like goodwill nearby, juicers are now common to find for 5$ more or less...

the juicer I have but what I may need is a glass vessel to ferment in. I'm sure I'll find/think of something though.

Gonna do it in a large glass jar. Looking into a DIY airlock but I don't have any flexible tubing around to just run into a water vessel.
You think polyfil or an SFD would work? We're just trying to allow gas exchange without contams entering no?

So I can add this applesauce like substance leftover from the juicing process? Its been sitting out in open air but I guess everything in the vessel will have been in open air and contaminant laden.
I did pressure cook my vessel and soak my makeshift airlock in bleach though. Hopefully this is a good procedure.

Think I included too much juicer pulp in my main batch. I think I see some sort of grey mold on top, not much of it though.
My other batch, merely apple cores from the main batch submerged in water with a loosely sealed lid, already reaks of alcohol when I took a quick sniff.
I think I'm gonna have to do another juicing run and leave the pulp completely out of the mix. I'm excited to have had any success, its cool how simple this is.

You should pasteurize the juice/cider before you ferment it. If you have a balloon you can use that as a ghetto airlock you may need to poke a small needle hole in it so it doesn't blow up. I think polyfill should do the trick aslong as the fermenting juice/layer of stuff on top doesn't come into contact with it.

I'm using the naturally occurring yeasts in the apples, so if I'm not mistaken, pasteurizing the juice would kill those yeasts.
polyfil or a baloon is a good idea...right now I've just got a plastic tube running into a cup of water as an airlock.
thanks!

Yes your right it would kill the yeast, I was thinking you were pitching yeast into it. I would stick with your airlock, its as good as a storebought one. If your gonna make another batch I would try out some champagne yeast you will get a higher alc percentage. And less chance of your batch being ruined by competitor molds. Using natural yeast can sometimes cause off flavors to. Dont use bread yeast whatever you do that stuff tastes terrible.
