Hey, hows it goin?
My FOAF would like to try something new with his setup that will save him space and electricity. In the picture, there is the tub containing the substrate and casing, the second tub is the same size and is empty. He would like to just put the empty tub on the tub with the casing and fan it out 3 times a day, would this be ok? Hes worried that without a hepa filter it would become contaminated or that there may not be enough air inside the two tubs.
Thats the first question, and heres the second:
In the book The Mushroom Cultivator, it is said that for every square foot of growing area you should get 2-4 pounds of undried mushrooms. Is this about right? What would you say is your average?

That will work fine for fruiting, and as long as you keep things somewhat clean there shouldnt be any contam problems. In my experience simple casings dont contaminate easily, but results may vary. As for yield, well there are so many factors including substrate type, depth, water content, the humidity of your setup, etc (the list goes on) that you will never be able to accuratly predict yields until you have tried things for yourself a few times. It wasnt mentioned what the substrate was, but I have generally found that cased PF-style cakes (1/2 pint) will yield about 8 dry grams, or 100 wet grams. Predictions made in The Mushroom Cultivator are fair, if you are using the specifications for casing laid out in that particular book.

My dog has seen trays such as your produce roughly an oz dried over two flushes. If you are experienced you should be able to pull a dried oz out a healthly ;-) quart of grain. But there are a lot of factors that will affect your success....So best of luck and post more pictures along the way. A side note, my dog suggest making two or more holes on the sides of the second bin and pull Poly stuffing through it. Get weather striping and apply it to the first tubs rim. This will give you at least a bit of O2 exchange and keep out contams.
