Black Bags for oysters
    #23434314 - 07/12/16 08:21 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Whats the deal with using black plastic for oysters? what is the benefit vs clear? Ive seen a few pics and videos of people using black but I cant find an explanation. I'd be worried about not being able to see it colonize or if there is contamination. But I guess its they same scenario for people who use buckets.

Unicorn bags is selling 1000 lots of black oyster log bags on sale for $75 vs clear for $290. So they must not sell very well.

Some species like browns pin like crazy so the black helps.  Buy yeah I wouldn't like not seeing either.  I suspect the price difference has to do with materials cost as well

I think Tradd Cotter said that P. Djamour have issues with light as a pinning trigger to, so black helps there too.  I haven't tried pinks yet though.

You can cut slits in a log of djamour the day it finishes colonising and 3 days later the whole thing turns pink with primordia regardless.

I've only had my pinks grow out of the slits, and they incubate with normal daylight in clear bags. So i doubt black bags would do anything! Like most oysters they pin where there is air, not so much light.

Nope, I have no experience with black plastic, just giving my experience with pinks in clear plastic. They seem to pin even where the sub is tight against the bag with no air.

If light is a big pinning trigger black bags might be useful if you want to delay fruiting after colonising.

My concern with black plastic is you can't see if it's contaminated.  I only ever had issues with fruits appearing ponder the plastic if I did not pack my substrate well.
