Advice for beginner finding edible mushroom supplies (Australia)
    #23433978 - 07/12/16 03:25 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hi guys,

So I've just started this hobby and I notice a lot of info on here is from America. I'm looking for some fellow Aussies to point me in the right direction for supplies (straw, grains, sawdust, cultures, etc) that are available in Australia.

For example lots of people seem to be using rye though I seem to have trouble sourcing it and it seems more expensive. I seem to be able to find lots of wheat. Is this a suitable alternative?

I've only managed to source a shiitake culture so far but I am interested in growing enoki and oyster as well. I probably should start off with oyster.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey mate, welcome  Wheat works fine, I tend to buy the cheapest stuff possible. Which city are you in?

If you send me a pm, I can probably and you an enoki and oyster plate. Otherwise, cheapest options for cultures are forest fungi or Selby shrooms.

Straw - city farmers, garden centres or stock feed stores
Sawdust - timber Mills, hardwood furniture makers or you can buy hwfp from bbqs galore
Grain - I buy bulk bags from city farmers, it's less than $1kg
