My first try at gormet cult tired of cubes lol
    #23433236 - 07/11/16 08:50 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So I orderd 3 new syringes and they came in a lc form wich I'm unused to. I made or should say tried to make a large lc from these .the blue oyster seems fine (what I'm used to mycelium looking like) my shitaki won't seem to takeoff at all and the reshi started normal but now has a floating island? Is this normal when cultivating diff species I'm using lmd 1tsp/500ml? Can anyone give me any advice?

I've expanded oyster LC before, basically created a liquid mixture with the formula from GGMM, including a few sawdust pellets and a magnetic stir bar in the jar with an injection port lid.  I would add some LC and let it grow in the medium for a few days before putting it in the fridge.  It worked pretty well and none of the cultures contaminated... I stopped growing for a few years but left my fridge running, it looks like a lot of the LC is still viable.  Perhaps the mycelium goes dormant when the sugars run out?

Reishi mycelium gets pretty rubbery and the "floating island" your describing sounds typical IME with reishi lc.

IME most shiitake strain culture's don't like water. Put those lc's onto some agar or grain then pull a sample of grain onto agar and make deep agar masters. 90% of those cultivating edibles stay clear of LCs, they are highly contam prone. Next time u get a culture look for wedges, slants, or plates.

I agree with Gr0wer, IME with Golden I needed plant fiber for decent growth.

Wood lovers are slow on most sugars, molds and bacteria are not.
WL's turn plant fiber into glycogen, a complex sugar.

Glycogen LC might work better, but a bad idea.
You are still adding sugars to water.

Expand to agar or paper.

I've alway had very good results with golden oyster, shiitake, and other easy growing gourmets just using a standard lc recipe per Stamets book. Which was essentially the same stuff as my agar mixes, just without the agar and more H2o...

It is possible to get dead or bad culture syringes but also sometimes depending on your culture source, some seem to take longer to revive and regrow.

If you've ever played around with grain water liquid culture/inoc. it does well to.

LC's can be as successful or contam. prone as you allow them to be. Take care of your shoes and they will most times treat you well. :buddha:

But as stated above, it is a good idea to also put your new cultures into several different baskets such as grain and agar plates etc.

LC is easily contaminated, not to be trusted without testing.  Oyster and reishi will form mats, and it suffocates the mycelium when the mat seals off the surface liquid.  You can avoid this by reducing the sugar content in the range of .1-.15 percent.  The length of time you pressure cook the lc has a big impact on how bioavailable the sugars are afterward, so you might get a little growth or a full jar with mat on .15 percent.

I wouldn't recommend lc to a beginner tho.

I started with LC syringes I got from Sporeworks years ago and expanded my cultures in jars with magnetic stir bars or broken glass in the jar.  Never had thevm contaminate.  They sat in jars unmolested for a few years and oysters did form a mat on the top, but that would not be a problem with regular stirring.  I actually dumped some elm oyster LC out that smelled fresh could probably still be used.  Once the sugars were eaten I think the mycelium went dormant.
