Couldn't find any answer on Shroomery. Im Guessing it doesnt work well, but would like confirmation. why is it any different than breaking up a rye jar to a sub? i am considering adding it to a straw or coco coir substrate. get back at me :3

you can use colonized brf cakes in place of spawn to inoculate a bulk substrate. if that's what you're asking?

That's exactly what I did. Once the cakes fully colonised I grated them and mixed with paustarised coir at 1:2 ratio. Worked well.

Pound for pound I reckon crumbled BRF is a better spawn than grain.
It would probably be more popular if not for grain being way easier and faster to colonise once you have a PC which most people doing bulk do.
It's a good idea though, using a few of your cakes to spawn to bulk can give some really impressive yields. At worse it will go to shit and you have a few less cakes in your SGFC but a heap of extra experience that might make the difference on future bulk grows.

sweet beanies, trusted cultivator, just curious on why you said in place of spawn? isnt it still just spawn once fully developedso it can be used the same as if it was fully developed mycelium formed from rye berry or popcorn or such?

I believe cakes are just best left as cakes. the return on investment spawning cakes just doesn't seem worth it if you want to do a bulk grow get some grain spawn going. cakes fruit fine and yield well as cakes, the yield doesn't go up that dramatically spawned to bulk but the pinset can make it appear so, weigh it out and I doubt youll be pulling more than 14g per half pint of cakes used

interesting weetsie, as ive done lots of reading and still had stuck in my head that grain takes longer. what would you say avg. time for quart of brf vs. rye on colonization?

I can colonize a grain jar in 1-3 weeks depending on how it's inoculated and shook. a brf cake takes 3-5 weeks usually.

Grain is faster because you can shake it turning 1 point of inoculation into 50, with BRF cakes you're waiting for the mycelium to run across the entire jar from just the 4 or so initial inoculation points.
By the same principle you can also grain to grain, 1 jar into 10, 10 into 100. One jar of grain could be turned into thousands in less than a month.

If you aren't using agar, then 1/2pint BRF is the way to go. Can use that to seed pints of grain too. Grain is a lot more flexible
