Perlite and peroxide
    #23431637 - 07/11/16 09:38 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Is it best to put a cup of peroxide in the perlite in the fruiting chamber every few weeks. Read that somewhere.

Absolutely fuck no.

It's a good idea to not even have peroxide in the house so you're not tempted to use it for anything mycology related

I would disregard this statement.

Fruiting is not a sterile procedure and it has absolutely no reason to be. Sure, you can throw some peroxide in your perlite but that's like properly pasteurizing coir instead of the bucket tek. Can be done but totally unnecessary and a needless waste of money.

Focus on what matters, which is clean spawn/cakes and you will never have to worry about spore loads and dirty perlite.

some quotes from the man who invented the SGFC

Why?  Bleach isn't toxic to mycelium.  Of course it's a waste of peroxide or bleach to soak new perlite.  Simply get it wet and go.

I did it, put perlite in a 5 gallon bucket with 2 caps of hydrogen peroxide then proceeded to scoop out with a mesh strainer - allow it to fully drain - then dumped in the terrarium. I will report back and let you know how it goes.

It seemed to go well thus far. I actually feel the perlite was able to absorb water more efficiently this way. When I was pouring water on top of the perlite it was growing from absorbing so much water so fast, it was pretty trippy lol I was thinking, "OH SHIT! It's gonna overflow!"

That's a waste of time and takes far longer than running water under a faucet through a colander.  Perlite doesn't absorb water, nor does it grow or swell up when wet.  It's a crystalline substance.  Just get it wet and use it.

I've read some mixed reviews on how much and when to use H202.

Using a bit of H202 in the perlite water seems standard.  Is there a viable use of H202 in dunking or misting?

Some people say it inhibits growth, which makes me want to avoid direct contact with cakes, and just leave it in the FC bottom.

The only use for peroxide in mycology is for spraying a substrate that has cobweb mold on the surface.  Don't use it in the perlite, and for damn sure, don't add it to the dunk water.  Peroxide is toxic to fungi, and that includes mushroom mycelium.

so yeah i'm sure i know what i'm talking about.

You could put a cap full or two of hydrogen peroxide  in some water and soak your perlite in it for about 5-10 minutes and drain well..

A waste of peroxide which will have zero effect.

The shotgun terrarium does not provide the perfect environment for molds, nor do molds grow on perlite, which is a crystalline mineral.

You don't put peroxide on perlite.  If it's dirty, simply boil in water for half an hour and then use.

see #3 in this thread
and even if you have cobweb peroxide is still useless because well see #2 in the above link

I only use peroxide to clean my ears. Peroxide in mycology is completely useless. Fuck peroxide.

I've seen SGFCs with algae growing in the perlite. Why would it be a problem if cakes are contaminated?
I just wouldn't bother to use it though. I never cleaned my perlite when I ran an SGFC.

clean it sure, if you ever let it get that bad. periodic rinses do wonders. and if it does get bad enough you need to wash it peroxide will be useless and a waist of money, because it doesn't wash anything
