California among 8 states to vote on legal weed in November 2

Quote:
Eight states, including California, will vote to legalize weed either for recreational or medical purposes in November. The legalization of marijuana for recreational use will be on the ballot on Nov. 8 in California, Nevada, Arizona, Massachusetts and Maine, according to Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML. Legalization for medical use will also be on the ballot in Florida, Missouri and Arkansas on that same day. "This is really a watershed year for marijuana legalization, so I'm hoping that we'll see some big changes in November," said F. Aaron Smith, co-founder and executive director of the National Cannabis Industry Association. Smith said he's "especially excited" about California. It's the most populous state in the country and the sixth largest economy in the world, surpassing France. "California really is the linchpin for hemispheral legalization," said St. Pierre of NORML, hoping that a green light in California could trigger a snowball of legalization throughout the country. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla confirmed on Tuesday that the legalization initiative exceeded the 402,468 signatures required to put the issue on the ballot. If the initiative is approved by voters, it would impose a 15% sales tax on retail sales of pot with additional taxes on the growers. The supporters of the initiative, like Dale Gieringer of the California chapter of NORML, say this could raise more than $1 billion in annual tax revenue and estimate that law enforcement costs could be reduced by at least $100 million. This is based on the assumption that retail sales would be at least $7 billion a year. Related: Cotton candy, tooth picks, pet gel: all products made from marijuana But tax revenue estimates for legalized pot tend to vary widely, are not always reliable. When the voters of Colorado legalized recreational marijuana in 2012, the state estimated that tax revenue from retail special sales could total $70 million during the first full fiscal year of dispensary sales. But in that time period, July 2014 to June 2015, the state actually brought in $42 million in retail special sales tax. Medical marijuana is already legal in California, which was the first state to legalize it in 1996. But despite California's weed-friendly reputation, there's no guarantee voters will pass another legalization law.
Prop 19, a ballot item to legalize recreation marijuana, went before California voters in 2010 but failed to pass. Prop 19 would have created a legal patchwork across the state, where individual cities and districts would decide whether it was legal or not in their particular places. Billionaire philanthropist George Soros supported it, but former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called it a "flawed initiative that would bring about a host of legal nightmares and risks to public safety." Since then, the voters of four states, including Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska, and also Washington, DC, have legalized marijuana for recreational use.
Related: Eight things to know about legal pot Medical marijuana is even more widespread. It's fully legal in 19 states and the District of Columbia, according to NORML, and 18 other states have partial legality, or have passed laws that haven't gone into effect yet. But marijuana is still illegal in the eyes of the federal government, which means it cannot be transported between legal states, even those that border each other, like Oregon and Washington. More importantly, from a business standpoint, banks refuse to handle finances from marijuana businesses to avoid running afoul of federal banking laws. So some dispensaries only deal in cash.

Yeah it will be interesting to see how cali votes even though it is pretty much legalized there already. I could see Arizona legalizing and a few others out of the 8 Nevada.

I really hope Nevada does. Nevada is actually a pretty cool state if you like wide open spaces and isolation. I'd love to be able to (legally) smoke in their state forests.
And if you other Californians don't vote for Prop 64, I'll hunt you down and frown in your general direction from behind the comfort and safety of my computer monitor!

Yes on 64!

but isn't smoking in public still illegal in the states that legalized weed? I was under the impression its only legal to use at home.

Not everyone wants to lie to a doctor, and most people who get cards smoke so much that they can't be bothered to renew them.

There are a lot of greedy pot growers who are campaigning against it. They value their profits more than the freedom of their customers.

Not positive but even if public smoking is still technically illegal being able to legally carry cannabis with you kind of defeats the purpose.
If your walking around some suburban neighborhood toking up in front of soccer moms you might get arrested regardless of medical or recreational laws.
But if you legally bring a bunch of weed out to the middle of no where in a forest who the hell will care?
Just don't be throwing still lit roaches in the woods in front of park rangers and I doubt anything will happen.

^^This exactly
Colorado is trying to pass laws that allow 'Pot Clubs.' Basically what they called cafes in Amsterdam. Idk if it will pass, it seems pretty weird to pass anti-smoking laws for all indoor buildings, then pass a law that allows an establishment to be a giant hotbox. We'll see what happens

I hope someday soon cannabis friendly concert venues start popping up... Some small venues around here are very chill with people smoking right outside.
But it would be amazing to be able to freely toke up in and around a great live music scene. Pass joints/ bongs up to the band and stuff
Surely it won't be long

I think there should be private bars for smokers. I don't mind going outside but losing the seat can be an issue and they don't let us piss at the bar either

In the town i live in theres a bar that you can go "out back" to smoke, which is basically the back part of the building which was renovated for an apartment that their son used to rent and is now empty. its zoned residential so people go smoke cigs and the occasional bowl or J back there.

In WA it is illegal to smoke in state parks. Or even to possess pot for that matter in state parks.

That is a tremendously stupid law... Meanwhile Evergreen's beautiful forest campus is littered with beer cans

Its because it is still illegal under federal law, and national parks are federal property, but I agree with you. It is ridiculous..

I guess that makes some sense then. Does that mean bringing cannabis to any federal property is still illegal then I would assume?

In regards to national parks, yea....
....but they're talking about state parks which are separate from the national parks, and I think state parks are ran under state government/laws and not federal. Unless I'm mistaken
Either way, wouldn't be surprised if the state's cannabis laws restrict smoking in state parks a well.

I know some cat, actually a fellow shroomery member I met a few years back, that had a medical cannabis card and still got popped for possession while in Yosemite (a national park/federal property). He had about a gram or so on him, and IIRC he was only given a ticket/fine.
I have some friends that work up in Yosemite and I live close to the park, last time I was up there visiting I had to toke up like a ninja and go way off trail and hide behind trees when I wanted to smoke ....When I smoke in "public" areas I'm always respectful of who's around and mindful of where my smoke is drifting, but it was weird having to be so sneaky about it and the feeling of smoking in a place where it's still very much illegal (on federal property) .
