Is wheat bran more contamination prone?
    #23431246 - 07/11/16 04:46 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

I've only ever grown shiitake on wheat bran supplemented sawdust blocks, sterilized in a pressure cooker. Never had contamination issues doing that way. But right now I'm looking at building a low pressure steam sterilizer like Grower's, so I can scale up. I believe RR recommends that if you are steam sterilizing at atmospheric pressure, you should use rice bran. If using wheat bran, he indicates that pressure sterilization is necessary. Why would this be? Is wheat bran more nutritious, and contamination prone?

I'm pretty sure quite a few of you are low pressure steam sterilizing wheat bran supplemented blocks, so do you have contam issues, or have you compared wheat bran to rice bran? Basically I'm asking because I have wheat bran readily available, but the only rice bran I can find is specialized horse mixes that are pelleted and contain a bunch of additives.

Thanks for your help, saintpedro

False. Sterile is sterile, its all based on time and temp. Just make sure you put a probe in the top bag your first few runs and start the 12hr clock around 200f core temp.

@Grower
Where do you get your wheat bran? how much? I've been getting rice bran for 11$/50lb sack at a local feed store. Can't compare it to wheat bran though, never tried it.

I pay around $13 a sack of wheat bran. Time will all depend on sterilizer design, sub weight, sub start temp and heat source BTU.

Thanks for the replies and advice guys, appreciate it. Sweet, I'll stick to wheat bran and will definitely invest in a temperature probe. Wheat bran runs at around $20NZD ($14.50USD) for 45lb sack where I am. Cheers

this may sound like a dumb question but can you substitute brf for wheat bran?

GGMM has an appendix that lists various supplements and thier nutrient levels.  It may not be a 1:1 substitution but it should work.

How much are you paying for your brf? If your only getting 1 lb bags its not going to be cost effective. Find a local feed store and get a sack even if it will take a while to use.
