Steam seems to be the method of choice (by far), anyone have luck with a lime-only pasteurization?

I am only doing cold lime pasteurising as of late. Been working great! The lime i am using is completly ground to fine powder, not those pepples got small 70-80 liter barrels i just fill with cold water and lime. mix the lime nicely with the water so it's got that beige color and dump the dry straw, close barrel but not completely tight and let it sit overnight. Using something like 3-400 ml of lime per run, can try and weigh it out next time, tried with less but didnt seem to go.

Is there any grain in your straw? I want to do a lime bath but my straw is awfully grain filled..

Usually always a few yeah, not sure if as much as you got (read your other thread) Sprouts here and there sometimes but i am sure you can find a proper lime ratio to kill them too
Aloha got a few things written down on their site way down on this page: http://www.alohaculturebank.com/low-tech-growing.html

Ah well, must clean out your straw then i suppose, not really sure how you would do that though. Like finding needles in a haystack possibly? *
Maybe try another source for your straw or use heat

We gave the Lime bath method a good try here in Texas, and got mixed results. Pretty low BE, and too much contamination for it to be worth it. Now we're using a livestock tank with a heating element to pasteurize the subs up to 165f for a couple hours. Should no for sure which works better for us in a couple weeks.

we grow out own wheat and dry corn. on the shredded stalks we use lime to pasteurize it. works very well for us and very little contamination. our wheat straw has grain in it here and there, we actually get sprouting grains from the bags, they die off eventually and get consumed by the mycelium. this is just my experience, I have only done about 300 lbs of straw so far.

They also confirmed what your saying, mixed results, most people don't use it and do the steam treatment.

I was thinking some grains would get pulverized and cause contamination but I don't know for sure.

Sounds like a good idea, a quick wash first to get the worst of the seeds and whatnot. The soap cant hurt on the pasteurising either

It just depends on conditions on the ground, whether or not lime and detergent will work. Worth a shot cause propane is expensive and hydrated lime is cheap. Cotton seed hulls are a good boost too

I was a big fan of hot water bath. I had good results with straw, 20% fuel pellets and around 3% organic fertilizer. Got as much as 30 lbs first flush off 65 lbs of dry sub. The straw i was getting had a lot of seeds and lime typically had some contam spots.

What percentage of seed hulls do you use?

In another thread, drake said: Right now I'm averaging 1.5# or so per bag first flush. (from 5 lbs sterilized sawdust+soy hulls), which is 30 percent BE first flush.
but 30lbs off 65 is awesome.
@gr0wer: Why not just stick with straw?

Drake is comparing wet weight, im doing dry. Drake gets about 1.5 lbs off about 2.5-3 lbs of dry sub. Im getting around 1 lb first flush off the same but still dialing in, also a bit warm in my chamber 3014. The main reason why i swapped was due to how dirty straw is, makes a mess of your prep area and incubation stinks a few days after inoculation.

Increased BE through grass photosynthesizing additional substrate?
