Wheat straw, random grains and seed heads along with bales
    #23431956 - 07/11/16 12:25 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So... I've noticed that when I buy a bale of straw, there is a significant amount of wheat grain (left over from the harvest presumably).

I would say I could gather a cup or two of grains per 75 bale.

A) is this normal?  If so how do you guys deal with it?
B) would this not ruin any pasteurization attempt (steam or lime)?

Grain lodged in with the straw is normal. The mechanical harvesters get 95% of the grain (just a guess) and some always remains. With steam or water bath, these grains don't sprout later on, but with the lime bath you will get sprouts. You just have to see what works for you. Sprouts aren't a problem unless they cause mold to take hold...

They can survive 24 hours in 11.5ph lime water and they even survived a 2 hours 165f pasteurization too, maybe I fucked up on that one but I'm pretty sure I didn't

Either way they have never caused me any noticeable problems with oysters though slower species might be different if they die and rot inside the bags.
