Golden Teacher Pins
    #23431366 - 07/11/16 07:02 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

SWIM needs some advice. I guess I will use this thread as a log of a first time grow. SWIM is an an absolute noob. So, if this thread needs to be moved or is in the wrong place then apologies.

It's been about 7 days since the first pins were seen. Since then just more and more have shown up and the original cluster at the bottom hasn't grown at all. Is it possible to have too many pins? Also, is this a symptom of not enough oxygen? any advice is appreciate.
Regular pf tek setup, 12 on and off, fanning/misting every 3 or 4 hours, around 93 RH and 75F temp, holes in the bottom of terrarium etc., but i'm thinking maybe there aren't enough holes in the sides.

TLDR: does this look normal? is it possible to have too many pins for active growth?

Do you have 1/4" holes? Are they in a 2"x2" grid pattern on all six sides?

That cake is super wet, and it is pinning on the bottom because the microclimate is better between the cake and the lid... Rolling in verm, and having a proper built chamber would help with that... Ease up on the misting... Best you can do now is wait it out.

yeah like 9 said, the verm wouldve helped, but dont do it now, obviously. and now that you have pins that are that size, you might want to cut back on misting so much, that way they dont get waterlogged/bacterial blotch. it is easy to do. but good job, almost there

Yeah, that cake is super wet. You want to increase that FAE as much as possible.

It looks like you already got replies to the rest so I'll address that. Short answer - no, I don't believe so. The worst I've ever had from "too much" was mutant-looking mushrooms from them growing into each-other which to me wasn't a biggy.

I guess if someone cared how they looked it or didn't get enough fresh air exchange it might be bad but get that FAE in there and I don't see a problem.

Actually how they're growing, the grower will probably wind up with some neat looking clusters.

I remember my first set of pins. I was ecstatic.
Congrats to SWIY!

SWIM went home and snapped a pic of the SGFC on his lunch break.
Will definitely dunk and roll in fine verm for the remaining cakes. The one that is in there colonized way faster than the rest for some reason. SWIM had to order some verm online because they just don't sell it around her. even at the Tractor Supply place, which is surprising. He bought the jars with the substrate already mixed in online. SWIM will also stop misting so much. maybe twice a day is good? Thanks for the replies ya'll. it's really appreciated.

Where are all your holes?  From the pic I'm seeing maybe two. Unless I just can't make them out.

Don't swim here. Everyone know it means someone who is me.

Next time don't skip the dunk and roll technique (seen in the PF TEK)
The only two PF teks that are worth following are the lets grow mushrooms videos brf/pf TEK or the one posted here by evilmushroom666

No holes in the lid? The lid is too close to those cabinets all Six sides need 6-12 inches of space so air can flow around the holes you drilled

Just want to say thanks to the community for all the tips. Things have really taken off since i moved everything around and allowed more FAE. Won't be long now. I figure I will wait to birth the other cakes until this flush is done, so i can dunk and roll them all together. The last jar just fully colonized this morning. Everything still look normal to you guys?

Well here we go folks. Everything turned out ok for the first little test run. Time to dunk and roll all the cakes and do it again. Should be a pretty interesting weekend. :mushroom2::eek:
Thanks again for the help. This is a great forum.

Thanks for the greetings, man. It was almost shocking to wake up and see those. I had pins for a week and just a few little changes made them grow in like three days. They were way more golden and pretty looking than i thought they would be. Drying them out is kind of sad you know?

I think I had the same exact problem that you did in the beginning of your post. So how exactly did you get yours to start pinning? I had basically the same set up you did in the beginning of your post aside from an aquarium pump to help with the FAE.

Lol! Asking how he got them to pin like there's some magical secret. They pin when they want. They don't care what you do. You don't even have to do anything... Left this bad boy in my closet too long :hehehe:

You'll notice they never pin at the same time. They just pin when they like.

I'm asking because I don't think I have enough FAE, not because I think he put some spell or  sorcery on his pf cakes to make them start pinning. He said he made some modifications to his grow chamber

Although that is a possibility. Fae makes more pins IME, it isn't why it pinned, as was pointed out by the pics. I just didn't want you or the OP to think we have control over when it pins, just the environment it pins in.

It wasn't that there were no pins. My pins just sat there for a week and didn't grow because I had my setup under a cabinet and in the corner next to my fridge. I moved it out to another part of the counter that had a foot of space on each side. Also, I poked holes in the lid. I had previously only poked holes in 5 sides. FAE is super important for the pin to fruit stage i guess.

it is. FAE is one of the most important things for good fruiting. if the the most important, considering it has the other things it needs.

Absolutely agree. I have stopped thinking about it as if i'm growing plants in the window sill (so to speak). More like having little pets that i have to feed and maintain on a daily basis. They need to breath air and to eat food and drink water too. Here is the start of round 2. The top middle is the cake from the previous posts. Lots of bruising after the dunk for some reason on that one and the verm didn't stick so well. Anyone know why this happens?

when you roll in the verm, let it sit in the verm for like 30min or so, before you put it in the SGFC. then also, wait a few hours or even a day before any misting. that will give it a chance to stick to the myc better. although, you are supposed to roll on the first flush.

More FAE! Let it have at LEAST a foot from anything around ALL sides! That water evaping is pin trigger! They can grow like over an inch in just a couple hours with the water evaporating! Its amazing.

Make sure your not pointing the spray bottle diresctly on the cakes.. Kinda point it into the air & let it fall beautifully onto them!

Also dont let them look "wet" or drip down the sides.. You wamma see little beads of water all over, they will literally glisten, or look like tiny little diamonds all over.

O and apparently (just learned this today) if you have giant-like blob pins, let the cake sit in very little water, like a 1/8 in. On a dish or jar lid. Or else the cake wont have enough water to support the giant pins which are baby mushies!

Change that water DAILY. Maybe twice a day really...

I have moved it since the last pic of the FC. It's well away from anything now. I cleaned my kitchen really well with a little bleach and water, and now I'm letting The FC sit with no lid for the rest of the day to let things evaporate and breathe a little. If this doesn't work, i might just try to rig something further from the ground like you said. Does anyone else put a little fan on the outside of their FC? I've seen a lot of mixed opinions about this.

Be careful leaving the lid off, id put it diagonally instead, bc you dont want to loose your RH either. If its possible for you, id just fan more often today to get that moisture to leave a bit. If they were mine, id put it on slanted, with also fanning like once every hour or two for 30 sec. But CAREFULLY. You have to use your eyes to judge that theyre not drying out. How long have they been in your FC?

i had a fan on in my hallway with my door half shut, about 4 feet away from mine, and it wasnt pointed dirsctly at it, but created a little of a draft.. My cakes dried a bit nd i aborted some giant pinsets i had going... :frown:
I actually just posted about that issue yesterday. So id stick with manual fanning or slanting the lid.
The slanted/diagonal lid idea i read from one of RRs posts.

I think that is probably the consensus from what i have read. (the little fan being a no-go.) I'm probably just over reacting again. lol. I had a lot of worry moments during the first little experiment and everything turned out fine. Just have to trust the tek, even if it seems counter intuitive. I'll go check our your thread, man. Thanks for taking a look.

Also, is this aerial mycelium?

That is a blurry pic tho.

well, thats a pretty nice pinset, good job. just keep providing ideal conditions and you'll be good.

Thanks man! There's still two cakes that haven't pinned, hopefully they are saving their strength to make some giant whoppers. lol. pretty happy with this first grow. I guess the next step is monotub?

or agar. agar is easier than it seems, and very useful for ever aspect of this hobby.

Just a hypothetical, has anyone on here tried planting these cakes in a cow field? What would happen? I guess I'm just curious what to do with these when I'm done with them. They've served me well, I feel like they deserve a better fate than the city dump.

probably similar things that would happen when you bury a cake almost anywhere. it will probably fruit, but you will probably get more fruits from giving it the most ideal conditions, inside.

but lots of us bury our spent sub after it's fruited, and even contam'd sub and it will still give us a few more fruits. but we kick nature's ass at yield produced, when given proper conditions and whatnot.

Is it possible for the mycelium to just keep spreading through the whole field though? I mean, given enough time, does it just keep going? when does it stop?

short answer, no.

however, i dont have enough knowledge on the specifics to warrant an explanation for that. someone else here will, though.

EDIT - actually, i guess technically it could be possible, but likely not probable.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Lol. Still fun to think about. I'll probably bury them out there just for the heck of it.

Nice ass cubes bro!(Let'em get a lil bigger though)Yes in an old cow field that has been an area say 5 acres, and has been there 20 years or so then yes it can spread almost everywhere through the grass. Yes I have found Cubensis in some fields coming up almost everywhere(allways after excessive rainfall) In the grass. I even have a couple fields that they come up all in the pine straw almost everywhere here and there, but usually lots of smalls(bigger ones in grass usually). So I am pretty sure there is cube mycelium almost everywhere in some fields anyhow depending the age of the field. Good Luck with everything. Peace & Love

I think I'll go ahead and pick these since some of the veils have opened. The bottom left 2 didn't get the memo and are a little late to the party, but check out that pin on the bottom middle! I guess I was right about it saving up it's energy for a whopper.

This is the mush from the big pin off the original cake. (second flush)I know I'm not breaking any records here on this forum but it made me super happy because I was able to finally make a spore print. It feels good to have a backup plan. I read somewhere on here that second flush usually produces larger fruit than the first. Is this true? and why?

just depends. depends on genetics, depends on how much it put out on the first flush, depends if the second flush is given proper conditions to fruit like the first was... just depends =p

It did seem pretty random. I'm glad I got lucky. spore print turned out pretty good as far as I can tell.

I'm attempting to bump up the production just a little. Nothing too crazy. I have scraped all the verm and reduced the cakes to just colonized mycelium again. I wrapped them in foil and put them in the freezer. I went and got a bigger fruiting chamber tote and a large cake pan that fits inside with a little room around the edges for the humidity to come up through the perlite. My question right now is about substrate. Can I just crumble these cakes into a bunch of sterilized WBS? Or do i absolutely have to have some kind of manure or something similar? I figured bird seed would be best because i don't have a pressure cooker. Can I just boil the bird seed and throw it in the cake pan with the crumbled cakes and incubate that way?
Heres the new SGFC tote

spent cakes? no.. bury those and start more. then after 100% colonization, you can crumble them to bulk. the spent cakes are spent though.. nothing else you can do with those.

hmm. I haven't been on here in a while and actually went through with it without checking first. (i know i know) I can see the myc coming up from the top of the sub, but I'll take your advice and start some new jars tonight just in case. Thanks for your help.
edit: I went with manure btw. I didn't know what i was talking about with the bird seed, can i use this for the jars? The spent cakes might not have been fully spent. I only flushed them twice. Maybe that is why they are still going. IDK. I'll update in a week or two.
