Forstner Bits vs. Spade Bits for drilling holes in metal jar lids?
    #23431245 - 07/11/16 04:45 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Are spade bits any good at drilling *clean* holes in a metal jar lid? I've heard good things about Forstner bits and I would probably go for those, but spade bits are a bit cheaper and if they can get the job done, then I can save a few bucks there....

I'm trying to upgrade from using regular bits to drill the holes and man, was that a disaster. I mean, they'll get the job done, but I'm kind of a perfectionist and I like my work (especially when it comes to this hobby) clean, pretty, and organized. The metal burrs on the other side of lid was inconvenient as well. After a shake, WBS kernels would get stuck near the burrs and start colonizing there and just causing a mess. Also, cleaning the lids after use was just absurd, I'd just throw them away.

So I am looking for an improvement from regular bits; will spade bits be any better? Or should I just splurge and go for the Forstner bits?

Buy one of these if the burrs bother you... All you need to do is drill a 1/4" hole... No need to spend money on a fancy bit...

Use a twist drill for your hole then use a larger twist drill as a countersink, just touching enough to remove the burr. If you're completely OCD roll some wet&dry into a tube to remove any microburr that might remain.

Try a step cone drill bit. They work great for making holes in lids with minimal burs.

Neither lol. Use the correct bit. 135° split point high speed steel bit. Like 2-3$ then eliminate the user error because those make the best clean holes
