Hen of the woods? Meripilus sumstinei? ID help please!
    #23429846 - 07/10/16 05:04 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I found a giant mushroom in my yard and would like someone's help to identify it. After some initial googling I think this is either hen of the woods or Meripilus sumstinei.

The big mass is growing at the foot of a white oak tree. It's about 2' x 2' in diameter and maybe 10" - 12" tall. There are other smaller mounds of the same type in the vicinity that are anywhere from 8" x 8" to 1" x 1".

It has tiny tiny little pin-prick pores on the underside. Comparing pictures of the pores between hen of the woods and Meripilus sumstinei it looks closer to Meripilus sumstinei.

It smells kind of like faintly sweet, damp cardboard. It's very fleshy and rubbery. It tears in strips down to the base but is difficult to remove from the base by hand. I read that Meripilus sumstinei should bruise black from me handling it, but after half an hour or so after I pinched it in several places to test this it has not bruised.

My yard is in the burbs outside of Richmond, VA. It's only mid July so isn't it kind of early for hen of the woods? After typing this up I think it's Meripilus sumstinei, but would appreciate any other opinions!

Yes, black staining around the cap margins.
