Weed and dreams
    #23429059 - 07/10/16 11:23 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I briefly looked it up and according to some data in most people their dreams during sleep time are inhibited and in others they report that smoking cannabis makes their dreams more intense. It seems around 50/50. I haven't really noticed this and am inclined to say it inhibits my dreams generally.
I'm interested in knowing the consensus if anyone is willing to share their experiences with pot and dreaming.

For the majority of people prolonged THC use inhibits dreaming. I am a daily user and I never dream, but as soon as I take a break they will come back full force, as intense as ever.

This is because THC inhibits your REM cycle by changing when and how much you sleep, also invoking short term memory loss if you smoke before bed, sometimes you dream and do not remember but usually the body does not get much REM under the influence of THC as the deep sleep stage before REM is usually prolonged

When you quit your dreams are vivid and intense due to the REM rebound effect, similar if you've ever dreamed in a drunken slumber, that is also caused by the REM rebound

Celastrus seed can help increase dream activity, ime. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition seems to bring the dreams back if you're a Cannabis smoker, also seems to take away the brain fog.

Yeah I kind of know why and all that but was mainly wondering if this is so then why some people gain more intense dreams. Generally they say everyone's body and physiology is different so it might have something to do with that. The short term memory thing has something to do with it I suppose but also included seems to be a throwing off of the brains natural wave cycles, how it shifts during sleep. In fact, when stoned the brain tends to reflect a similar state as if it were asleep. But I know it can be complicated and you may have to time things just right in order to experience a clear and maybe lucid dream sometimes. Being sober tends to help obviously.

I've also heard there are other substances which can actually aid in the sleep or dreaming process... The thing is with pot and how it may change one's schedule, they may still get sleep but it could be dreamless. I suppose they still dream but can't remember it rather than not having dreamt at all? Because with tolerance, you should see or remember some dreams actually but usually it would in no way be as clear as if one were sober, and being sober doesn't necessarily mean you will get the whole dream thing down without practice or however you may be inclined. Taking supplements while stoned also may not necessarily help with dream recall.

I would be more so leaning REM is heavily effected by the prolonging of the deep sleep stage resulting in reduction of dreams. The people who experience more intense dreams experience the rebound effect

THC suppresses dreams for sure. I have extreme vivid dreams when i dont smoke for a few days. It almost feels like lucid dreaming.

It should, but I was kind of skeptical when people say it makes their dreams more intense. Maybe they weren't smoking everyday; that's the assumption. It does really only take one to two days to get the rebound effect. So, I'm still skeptical when people say smoking weed makes their dream more intense, assuming it's their dream that night and go to bed a few hours after smoking. If you smoke once in the morning by the time you go to bed at night you might even be able to get back to regular.

exactly but for someone who say smokes all day or has rituals like morning noon and evening/before bed would deff notice a change in dream patterns if he/she quit smoking dope adverse to a casual smoker or maybe someone who just enjoys a bowl or two a day.

I've been a daily smoker of cannabis for about a decade now and I always smoke before going to bed....I still dream vividly every single night, I recall my dreams clearly from every night (and I still remember many of the dreams that I've had through out my entire life), and I have lucid dreams at least once or twice a week.

Cannabis hasn't dulled down my dreams, or diminished my dream recall, what so ever  .

Is it that you don't have dreams, or you just don't remember them?

I've been a daily pot consumer since 1977 I'm pretty sure I've always had dreams. If you asked me about them 5 minutes after I woke up, I couldn't tell you anything. But I know that I have some pretty realistic dreams every night.

However - when I'm off pot, my dreaming goes through the roof. It's so intense that it's annoying. Dream Theater is a brilliant name for a band. They must have come up with it after running out of pot.

This to the max. I stopped smoking dabs and weed this past week cold turkey just because why not. Not for good just for whenever I decide to smoke again haha. Had a lucid dream last night and the night before that I had a profoundly weird dream. I do wake up in a pool of a sweat every night, symptoms from quitting.

While you can dream as a daily smoker, it doesn't happen often.

It is important to have moderation and balance with everything. Just because of this thread I am now taking further action to quit for at least a little bit.

I've realized THC seduces you into a deep relaxing sleep stage before REM, and the duration THC is active will prolong that state - and that's why it can take most people to sleep pretty easily especially with increased intake it basically puts you into a mindstate of deep sleep calmness, the more you intake the more effect until you fall asleep and are fully seduced by the deep stage.

Prolonged deep sleep stage and no REM is unhealthy! I am beginning to run into problems from reduced to little REM sleep in my life I wake up feeling more tired than when I fell asleep I'm never refreshed it can contribute to chemical and hormonal imbalance, anxiety and eating disruptions and loss of motivation in general is from NO REM SLEEP!!

If your dreams are more intense from weed you don't use very much and is a result of a prolonged deep sleep stage and REM Rebound effect creating the illusion your dreams are more intense
:peace:

I still dream every single night....Like I said, I've been smoking daily for about 10 years now and always smoke before I lay for sleep, and I still have lots of dreams every single night and I have no issue remembering/recalling them . Sometimes my dreams will have long story lines and "stable" settings where I'm in the same dream all night long, other times it's just a constant flux of things bubbling up from/through my subconscious that manifest into various loosely related "dream fragments" .

I can still recall dreams that I had years ago, even back through out my childhood years.

Having a sleep with no dreams would be bizarre, I literally can't recall ever having a night where I didn't have dreams...When I wake up, regardless if it's morning or in the middle of the night, I'm never waking up from a "blank" sleep, I'm always coming out of a dream or some weird head space where I'm observing/experiencing all sorts of random things passing through my subconscious. I feel like I'm constantly "aware", even when I go to sleep.

Yeah there are a few like melatonin supplements or mugwort tea has been known to aid some people. Will probably see how it holds up to those.

Do you mean it acts immediately, like you can smoke then inhibit acetylcholinesterase and have dreams? Or from your experience does it just help speed up the sobriety process? I ask because the process of getting back to bass line normally can be fairly convenient anyway and plus it can take practice to remember dreams let alone do lucid-ish ones while sober too. If I stopped I could experience dreams within the next couple days if I work at it but then it could abruptly stop too even; depends on your habit and scheduling plus I believe the longer you are clean the clearer your dreams would be as well.

But also if one were to smoke so much his tolerance would be rather high dreams still will creep in upon sleep but the effects of cannabis may generally render the dreams duller than if one were more sober. Thus, it isn't really worth it and sometimes an intoxicated person does dream but it's hard to remember - some believe people dream every night even if they don't remember, it still might be a long shot to say it can completely eradicate the dream process for the night.

Otherwise anticholinergic have been known the cause hallucinatory effects... I guess they generally work by blocking acetylcholine. Maybe they're related.

Interesting if this is true. I wonder if it's vaguely related to the notion that some mildly poisonous mushrooms are edible for some people, while making others sick. Also, it doesn't sound like it's due to having a tolerance, so the dreams being less affected. If true, then some people's dreams aren't really affected by smoking weed?

There are a number of supplements that can increase dreaming if you combine them with weed I wonder how well they still work.

I recently heard a side effect of malaria medication causes vivid, clear dreams. Want to look more into it.

I think it just makes them harder to remember and the dreams themselves overall more surreal and weird. Because when I smoke I notice I have dreams still; I can remember I had them but that's all I can remember...is that I had them and that's it. I don't remember what they were about or anything I simply am just aware that I had dreams that night so it just makes me much more likely to forget them. I still know they happened.

It's supposed to fuck up your brain and cause really shitty dreams.
Thats why they give it to people in Guantanamo Bay.
