Pasteurization question for growing oyster mushrooms

I am starting to experiment with outdoor oyster mushroom cultivation and am wondering about pasteurizing. I have some super fresh, beautiful wheat straw and I'm wondering if I need to pasteurize it at all? It's fresh, stored in a barn and very clean.
Also, any thoughts on using wood ash as a means of pasteurization? I have loads of it from our wood stove and would love to use what I have readily available. Lime is my next go to, but again, I'd love to use what I already have.
Lastly, I'm attempting to shred the straw with my weedeater which isn't as effective as if hoped. I recognize the importance of having smaller pieces but I'm curious if anyone has found this step unnecessary?
Thank you!

This is the actives form, where we primarily focus on the growing of drugs. You may be looking for this forum: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/13
Straw does need to be pasteurized. It does also need to be shredded fairly well. I have no idea about the wood ash though.

I always chopped my straw with a lawn mower. 3-5 passes and it'll be perfect.

Do you do just lay it straight down on your lawn and go over it with the mower?
