Has anyone found any in the herts/bucks area? I've been mostly looking in local fields and parks and not found one yet.
This is my first year of searching and I could do with some help identifying suitable fields and the right shrooms.
Anyone fancy going on a shroom hunting trip in the herts/bucks area?

All I can say is research it! Libs in general like sheep pastures and high elevations, cyans in general like woodchip flower beds, specifically alder woodchip. Both thrive in cold and wet conditions, so I'd be out 24-48 hours after any rain.
Top tip with libs; morning and evening are good times to hunt as the sun casts shadows which make them easier to spot. Cyans can grow literally anywhere there is woodchip, but they seem to prefer rose bushes and rhododendrons. Look in pub play parks, roundabouts and botanical gardens. They have been found growing wild under blackberry bushes (which again they seem to favour, and strawberry too) but this is uncommon.
Sheep pastures for libs, towns and cities for cyans.

Thanks very much for the tips. Didn't know about the Cyans, I'll keep an eye out for them. I think I'm more likely to find them then the liberty caps given my local geography.
As far as liberty caps are concerned - Is it only high-elevations and sheep pastures that they can be found in? I have some cow fields at a low elevation near me, where I went to last weekend, but didn't find any. I attributed not finding any to the lack of cold/damp weather - looks like I was just wasting my time.

Not necessarily, libs can be found pretty much anywhere there is decaying grass as they are saprotrophic and feed on the decaying organic matter. You could, hypothetically, find them in your back garden. They love nutrient-rich areas (hence the manure fetish) but they prefer sheep dung over cow dung. Saying that, there is another highly active psilocybin containing species called Panaeolus Cyanescens (not to be confused with Psilocybe Cyanescens) that grows exclusively on cowpats.
Your best chances for libs would be a high elevation, north facing sheep pasture. Your best chances for cyans would be rotting alder woodchip with roses in it.

No problem, just remember NEVER to eat anything you find before 100% positive identification! Oh and one last pointer, psilocybin mushrooms are illegal once you pick them, but if you're 'just looking' (nudge nudge wink wink

Do cyans only fruit at high altitude like the libs or can you find them at any elevation.

There's actually a distribution map on the internet that I saw, can't remember what website though. Closest they've been found to where I live is Plymouth which is at sea level. I'd say they can be found at any elevation. Mushrooms are weird, they grow wherever they feel happy. My best bit of advice is research the hell out of them on the internet.

I've got a place lined up to search at the weekend. The weather is about right now ie getting colder, though not freezing overnight.
I live in a city so it takes a bit of work and planning to get out into the countryside. That said it's good to get away from town and get some fresh air.
Will let you know how I got on.

Hi again, I think I have had more luck today! I have found these in the south east, I am fairly certain the top 4 are libs and would really appreciate an ID from someone more experienced.

The latter two photos look like cyanescens to me but I wasn't sure enough to pick them. I know it's the wrong thread for those but if anybody can ID cyans as well that would be great.

They were found in a field and they have blue all over them, especially the stem but there is some bluing on the cap as well. The cap is also very sticky and seems to have a membrane which is peeling off.
Stropharia sp.
-------------------- I give you the choice of 2 pills.
With each containing one of the following: Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk? Didn't think so. This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.
