Hello everyone, I believe I've found my first libs of the season! However, I'm pretty near to the south coast, and these were found at about 60m so it seems much too early in the season and I'd like a second (perhaps third and fourth) opinion. I'm pretty sure that these are libs though.. Still waiting on spore prints but I'll post those when they come through if necessary.
Thanks and happy hunting!

classic looky likes that similar to what 'shroomsoutwest' had... the texture to those are fairly reflective , when libs have that layer of skin on the cap making it more fleshier like.
some of those you have let on a more of a shinier/polished looking and smoother feeling on the cap than the liberty cap. - I notice blueing on one, but that don't mean to say it is active, poisonous can still bruise blue.
couple maybe , hard to tell, but I'm sure some arnt, more opinions needed and spore print..
then again I think some are....... not 100 % tho
cheers

Are you talking about Mycena acicula? I would know those because the gills would be pale or yellow orange? A young wet lib would have mauve gills which dried darker? Or Conocybe pubescens could look similar but again gills would be wrong. Think I got one of those yesterday now the spore prints are done. Got a rusty red print. I think I get a lot of Panaeolus papilionaceus but they are different particularly with the velvet brittle stem. I might mix up a small, old, dried Protostropharia semiglobata if the drying had made the gills look like they where attached up inside the cap.

I'll probabaly make some of this lot into lib smoothie and pour it in the park. More libs growing in the park would be nice.

This is the best looky likely info I've found https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15105900

So I messed up the spore prints a bit, but they were both coming out a dark purplish-brown. I also rehydrated one to check for a gelatinous pelicle, which I found to be present. In light of this I'm fairly certain that these are in fact libs - shroomsoutwest would you mind indicating which ones you're uncertain about?
Littlespider I had a look through those looky-likies, the only one I could consider these close to is Panaeolus acuminatus, but the gills aren't the same.
To be honest, if these aren't libs then I don't think I'll ever be confident in identifying them. They share the key features (purple-brown spore print, nipple, gelatinous pelicle, shreddable stipe, blueing, significant colour change after drying). If there are other mushrooms so similar which might poison me I may have to give up!
Thanks for your time

There are a good amount of lookalikes, but if you buy a book that has the lib in it, when you find a mushroom you can do an overview of the key features of the mushroom. If any aspects of it like the nipple not being there are missing then its probably not a good idea to carry on...
I have found a shit tonn of lookalikes so far, but they are usually recognizable because they will lack one of the features that a lib has, while having the rest of them...

Hi,
First time hunter, does anyone know if these are libs? Picked them today. All bunched together so I'm guessing the same type. some have got a clear nipple but they don't curve underneath as much as I thought maybe they should do...
Any help appreciated!

when libs are somewhat dry they are rubber in texture and feel , like flesh, those I think some are the ones that have more of a smooth veneer like feel, like a polished surface, 2 of the ones I feel not. , I think the rest are though.. best way I can describe the texture I mean is that of the outer skin of a died onion.
I'm 50/50 , spore print needed for sure here
if there not libs you'll never be confident? na ofcourse not.. learning curve and push to progression
I feel some are , but same time I'm sure some are not, I see two that describe the texture I'm talking about..
soz I'm not much of help, I think the most of them are though, but at same time I do know there are ones that look very much alike , but soon know when dry .. I'm confused now lol
Colour, were they very slimy when you first picked them? if so not libs, they not that slimy , even when wet..
dunno man, think u in luck. wish could confirm 100%
frazer you pic aint showing.. re up it m8

Just checking in!
Having a fantastic season, simply cannot pick enough of these little things, I've got about 150 grams dried now and not a clue what to do with them. Don't take them myself and my friends are starting to drown in free libs lol but I am addicted to getting out there and hunting them, I love everything about it.
If anyone wants some feel free to send me a PM , if I store much more my floorboards are going to give way.
Also off-topic but anyone here take poppy pod tea? Found an incredible source for pods, cheap and good quality. Just really, really need to keep on top of it as in no more than a couple of times a month - it is so nice and additive.

I'm almost sure I ate a couple of young Stropharia pseudocyanea last week. Mistook them for young libs. The blue as bruising. What a fanny. Fortunately the jury is out on thier level of toxicity. They are not in the Deffinately deadly group. These guys

I spore printed them. Purple/brown. . Be safe in the hills folks

Yeah they are pretty. The photo makes them look a little green but in real life they where a bit blue. I edited above there..saying I spore printed them beause they where weird but Stropharia pseudocyanea does have a purple ish print. The penny just dropped today looking at different variety of Strophariaceae.
