Meat Shoe

What on earth would posess someone to do this? I mean, I know it's supposed to be art an all, but really, why??

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

it is pretty weird but it brings up all kinds of associations so I can appreciate that aspect.. seeing the meat and seeing the corporate logo of Nike brought to mind the mindless destruction of the planet by some of the major corporations.. it is super bizarre though.

Well, yah can buy shoes with no animal materials or by-products if you're conscious of such things.  Google Nike's sweatshops, sure doesn't seem like they care much more about their people than they would about the quality of lives of the animals they use in their shoes...... Not the proudest factor of living in Portland for me (Nike's headquarters are located here).

Shoes are symbolically related to oppression. egs, stepping on your enemies, killing another animal, or maybe a person, and wearing their skin to protect your own hooves:devil:

CJ, the town you always mention living in, it's in the state that apparently https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe#History has the world's oldest surviving sandal 7000-8000 BCE.  But it is suspected that leather shoes were worn 26,000-40,000 years ago based on the way toe bones changed.  but leather doesn't hold up to the ravages of time.

I wonder when the first person stuck their foot in a drying carcass and figured out it could be worn.

Shoes made from a man's skin

I also wonder if that artist in OP got the idea of the meat shoe from Lady Gaga's delicious bacon shoes.

Fascinating, will make an effort to see it, maybe today.  Thanks for the info.

This thread name reminds me of how some people refer to their bodies as their "meat suit." Creeps me out.

One of my most disgusting moments in life was when a guy I worked with showed me what was involved with animal testing.  It was such things as rabbits in cages that had bleach put in their eyes to test what it would do, and feeding mice all sorts of nastiness to make sure 50% of their population died, the so called LD50 test.

Your image of Portland as a caring place with such nice people is interesting to me.  I think when one goes out to eat and drink and meets the people that work in these places then they of course are so lovey dovey oh yes they are scrambling for a tip.  I live nearby, I mean it's pretty cool for a city, but I think that niceness is a bit of a facade I guess is my point.

Aye, I've seen enough animal cruelty for one lifetime.  Well, in general I'd say people are pretty damned polite in Portland, but that doesn't mean they are immediately warm and embracing.... Sometimes you have to make the effort to get your foot in the door to really get to know people here.  Portland is a reasonably sized city and I by no means say that there aren't varying flavors to it depending on your location, but I'd try spending more time down in the SE on Stark, Belmont, Hawthorne, Division, between say the 30-40 blocks, a bit in the NE around Mississippi Ave or Alberta if you want to actually meet and befriend some cool people.

I do like that SE area around Hawthorne and Belmont.  Very cool.  NE has more of that upscale snooty feel but honestly I haven't spent much time there.  The SE has that dirty feel but hipster dirty and I like that.  Yeah, Portland for a city is better than most.  The roads and getting back on the freeway however and lack of road sign is a pathetic situation.  It's almost like they want you to drive around in circles lost.

I guess if you were about to bonk, then you could just reach down and eat a little bit of your shoe, seems legit, although lacking in carbs.
