skip tape and stuff holes with poly fill?

I've been reading some posts about stuffing monotubs with poly-fill right after spawning. From what i've read, it seems like an ongoing experiment. Does the tub need to be cased if growing cubensis? If so, could I use some pasteurized coir/verm/gypsum substrate?

Yep, screw taping the holes. Haven't done it yet. New age understanding says spawn your grains with whatever you are using as your sub (cvg or hpoo) at around 1:2 spawn:sub, and then use another 1/4" casing layer of the same material ontop. The mycelium colonized the casing layer along with the substrate level to create optimal conditions for cubes. Then stuff with poly immediately and you won't have to touch it the entire first flush.
I would advise against fruiting after spawn without that casing layer. Things could dry out.

I copied franks method of dialing in the poly fill. Very loose for the upper holes and as tight as posible for the bottom. Is there another way that has proven to be more effective?

No that's pretty much it. Except you should be making sure the rings around the poly stuffed holes look right. Depending on your climate, the top holes might need to be tighter or the bottom might need to be looser.

azur's method is to actually tightly stuff the polyfill at spawning then loosen it for fruiting

yep. get it right, goddamnit!! no but you can ride it out looser. You just gotta really watch you moisture levels, because the myc will eat that shit up quick if you don't.
in fact, all the fruit at spawning methods are similar; back to time immemorial. you just fruit at a tighter poly dial.

Do you guys even use azurs method? you don't have to do anything of the sort if you know how to read the conditions. But yeah, I guess I should make a disclaimer if I'm explaining to a noob. But that's not really necessary

it's true though. I have the best success when I fruit at spawning dialed tighter. I loosen things up as fruits come through.
all the old fruit at spawn info I read was fairly similar. You still want a bit of that extra CO2, methinks.

and that's totally great... but if you want to cut back a couple of days from your first flush, just fruit at spawning with a casing layer or whatev.

yeah. fuckit. it's the truth. fruit at spawn, put a top layer, and you'll pin at least 3 days faster.
