Group throw-in for commercial cultures
    #23424321 - 07/08/16 05:53 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Howdy everyone!

Like a lot of people on these boards, I've dreamt of starting a small farm for a while now.  For the last two years, I've been learning, refining my techniques, and slowly building the equipment I need to take things to the next level.  Now that my equipment's been built and tested and I've saved up enough money to support myself for the next year, I've decided to start scaling back my full-time job to part-time so I can devote my attention to growing commercially.

I've noticed a lot of people have taken the plunge recently and I thought I'd see if there was any interest in going in together as a group to purchase 6 (or more) cultures from Aloha.  Why six, you ask?  Aloha offers a 33% discount on the purchase of 6-culture starter packs.  They offer two pre-selected packs, one with a variety of oysters and one with shiitake, or the option to tailor your own.

I've noticed there's a lot of S75, 3782, Maitake AZ, Wellington, and the like floating around, but not so much for other species or strains.  Given that Aloha's cultures range from $125-$350 a piece, it's a bit intimidating for a small-scale operation to throw down for several cultures at one time to reap the discount.  So to mitigate the cost, I thought I'd propose a group venture.

Proposal:

1.  Purchase six different species of commercial strains not commonly traded on the forums, but commonly cultivated by members (I'm thinking a few different types of oysters, a hericium strain, a. aegerita, etc.)

2.  Split the cost of the entire collection (not just a specific strain) equally among 6 - 10 people, for a takeaway cost of $100 - $150 per person.  Again, these cultures are expensive at $125-$350 a pop.  Even with a 33% discount, after taxes and shipping, the order will be around $1,000.  The final cost per person will be determined by the cost of the cultures agreed upon and the number of people going in.

3.  Because Aloha ships two master slants per culture, two individuals get a master of each and are responsible for providing backups to members whose cultures might get lost (contamination, physically lost in the mail, stolen, whatever).

4.  Have all funds ready to purchase selected strains by August 1.

That's the general idea.  Subject to change based on public opinion.  PM me if you're interested in being included!

I'm game PM sent. Now correct me if im wrong but whoever purchases the culture will always have access to the strain with only a shipping and lab fee? The cultures will each be shipped to a different cultivator so each person has lifetime access to one strain?

What are some proposed strains?

Only the purchaser would have access to the backups.  :frown:  That's why I was thinking of dispersing the two sets of masters to different people (other than the purchaser).  That way, the purchaser could always get a backup straight from Aloha and the people with the masters could replace Shroomery members' lost cultures with the best possible sample.  Considering how people come and go on this site, I thought it'd be better than having each person hold onto one - also, I don't think Aloha would like 6-10 names on the order form.

As far as strains, they put them into groups.  I talked to Aloha a few months ago about it and they said you could "tailor" the strains to your operation, but I think there's still some limitation on what you can choose.  I'll follow up with them when they open again on Monday.  As far as strain talk, I was going to see what the consensus was and go from there.  Glad to see you on board!

Dr tura was generous when I was broke and starting up he gave me trades for some funky wild clones I had.  I think you could maybe get a lot of mileage out of cloning their 12 pack of strains if you fruited them.  Or even putting grain back on agar.  I did buy the 3782 and it was well worth it.

So basically one person makes it huge... a better way would be do a group buy where everyone buys a strain themselves, shipping will be slightly more. And it would just be X (amount of people involved) number of separate purchases. But then you make X extra plates to mail out. Then everyone makes out even.

I'm prepared to spend decent money on strains, but a lot of people on here aren't.  If everyone goes in for an individual culture and shares, I'd be just as happy doing it that way, but it'll certainly cost more.  The only problem with that is you can't get the discount and if any one person drops off the forums, the other backers lose access to the best sample of the strain in that person's name.

Also, no one person makes it huge.  The purchaser still would need to pay fees for each culture they want a duplicate of and also be responsible for preparing plates and shipping them to others.  That would be the price for having access to the lifetime backups, having the most responsibility.  And everyone else still gets all the strains, theirs just have slightly more cell divisions.

I'm open to whatever method gets fresh commercial cultures at a bargain.  I'm perfectly willing to drop a grand myself, but I thought I'd float the idea here first as some people might be in the same boat.

Unless were talking about rare cultures its much more effective for me to buy a bag of spawn, take a culture off it then use the spawn for a batch. I currently have 6 month old Amycel 3015 (looking to refresh soon and try 3014), and 1 month old Aloha 3782.

Excuse me for hijacking this thread but got a question. Grower how long do you use a culture before replacing it. I'm using a strain of blues that I bought from mycelia three years ago. It's still yielding ok, my 3782 strain seems still strong and is still performing well. Should you replace every year for a viable commercial operation or can you get away with longer periods.
Cheers

Not to get to far off the OP, but this leaves me wondering why I would buy a culture for $350, when I can buy some spawn for $36 and make my own culture. Im sure their spawn is first generation (or whatever you would call it).

Well, Im in the same boat as grower with commercial strains, new to it but have a tiny bit of insight. I grow K01 eryngii from aloha, I originally got the strain as a grain bag, took grains to dishes and then to slants and stored. I ran that first bag of grain for quite a while, at least 3 months and never noticed production to fall, but when I went back to slant recently I saw that the mycelium did move faster and more aggressive.
You don't need to replace a strain, just keep the original culture stored with as little cell division as possible. Being that I have my cultures started from grain, Im probably pretty high on the cell division aspect, hence why I want some good slants from aloha, with the right care and maintenance they could almost last indefinitely.

I have also recently done the same thing with Amycel 3015, but it was gnarly, my spawn was bad when I got it and had to do some serious culture surgery and saving to get it clean and finally put onto slants, I have got to tell you though that culture is probably high up on the list for cell division though, we will see how it works out, and also Im ordering a new bag of spawn for it, so we will see how it compares.

I dont think commercial spawn is first generation, could be second but probably third or more.

Amycel and somycel produce more than 30 million pounds annually.  Just think about that.  They're highly sophisticated and automated.  I think they use LC sometimes.

Man I'd love to jump in on this but I'm not set up for agar work yet.  When I was doing this years go I used peroxide agar, which wasn't too bad if you handled it carefully.  I got a P. nebrodensis wedge from someone that produced an amazing fruit, I'd love to try it again.
