Yeast = faster mycelium growth?

I recently read that's it's better to not add a lot of nutrients to my malt extract agar, because it'll take the mycelium longer to grow, which increases the chance of contamination. ive noticed some recipes adding yeast to mea; other than adding amino acids and nitrogen, does it increase the speed of the mycelium is my question? I've only read one person claiming it increased the growth speed but that was in reference to shittakes and I'm wondering about psilocybe.

Speed of mycelium is related to a few factors. First AND most of all being the genetics and the strength of the culture you are using. Second being the amount of nutrients used in your agar. The less nutrients, generally the faster it colonizes because it is spreading out at the rate it is eating away at the nutes. Third being... I'm not really sure if that would be the addition of amino acids but I doubt any noticeable effects would be observed with the speed of growth.

I use .1g of nutritional yeast per 125mls water 2.5agar 2.5potato 1.75 dextrose.....i have made plates before not using the yeast, but now I add it every time I make plates. I would agree with SloppyJoseph that it does not make a very profound difference in growth rate.

What are the benefits/reasons why to use the yeast?

Yeast is used in agar media like YPD to make it a complete media for with all essential nutrients for growth. But say in MEA or PDA there's none added because they're already complete and have all necessary nutrients.
Genetics make your growth faster, and temperature, and sometimes the lack of nutrient IE less nutritional agar makes growth a little faster.
Otherwise there's no media that's a clear better choice than another one. YPD MEA PDA all work great for fungi.
You're asking the wrong question, hence the lack of a answer you want to hear

If there's no noticeable difference in speed and Excess nutrients aren't required, I still don't understand why people add yeast to mea

If the excess nutrients aren't recommended, but require, I meant to say... Sorry

It is a little excessive. People are creatures of habit though so everyone has their recipes. It works just the same

Most people act on their false assumption and go around making super charged agar recipes, and with all that waisted effort they could Haven learned themselves that under power agar is more helpful

Literally just put in half the recommended nutrients:agar ratio and watch that plate colonize quick as hell

I use nut. yeast in my agar, just a pinch. Not enough to throw off the balance, but enough to offer just a little more well rounded nutrition. Not sure if the growth is actually any hardier but I have it and I'm not using it for anything else so.... you know, fuck it.

Thanks for all of the input guys; I appreciate it. I think I'll add some yeast for some additional nutrients, but not enough to slow mycelium growth
