Are the spores viable if the cake is contaminated?
    #23423435 - 07/08/16 12:17 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I've already lost one cube cake to mold, and I only have this one left.  It's fruiting, and I'm waiting for this mushroom to unfold.  Is there any reason why the spores from this mushroom would be contaminated if there is mold on the cake?

It won't be contaminated because of the substrate. But the moment the cap opens, it is now exposed to open air, and will require proper drying of the print. Remember that.

They will be slightly contaminated regardless because you are fruiting
in open air. No matter what you will probably have to take that print to
agar to use.

If your substrate is contaminated then your print will most certainly be contaminated.

Agar, or order a new syringe.

I've ordered a new syringe, so we'll start from scratch.

These mushies will be ok though right?  Can I let them fill out?  Also if I still try out an easy tech for culturing, would say the inside of one of the shrooms be suitable for it, or is it contaminated? The mold on the cake is starting to creep onto the base of the fruitbody

You want to pick them and then cut away any moldy or rotten part of the fruit body, the rest should be fine to eat.

I would just go ahead and eat them while they are fresh if I were you.
