Moving + Downsizing

Have any of you guys been through this clusterfuck before?
I'm moving from a big 3 bed + Garage + Garden -> Single room + Shed. It's purely a money saving exercise so that I can get my debts paid and bugger off to start a new life in Australia in ~6months, but what a PITA.
I'm on my final day of sorting/discarding/packing/boxing/etc. Got a van rented for the weekend to finish the job.
I'm really hoping that I'll be able to feel some semblance of inner peace again once the move is complete. The last 6 months of my life have left me feeling the most ill-at-peace of any I've ever known.
How have you guys dealt with such situations before?

be logical about the use of the items and not get emotionally attached, try and sell as much as you can.
remember if you are going to down under land in 6 months you will be doing this again, to a more extreme measure for that move.

Thanks for responding man. Your first point is something that's been troubling me a little; I don't know if you've noticed how much of a passionate biker I am from my other posts, but I have a few and two in particular are like my pets, my babies. I know them like the back of my hand and share a deep bond with them.
Now I'm planning on putting them in storage at my parents place since they're going to Aus in a few years anyway and then can ship them by container with the rest of their stuff.
But the old saying 'it's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything' keeps rattling round my head. I mean, I have lost pretty much everything: my wife, my dog, my dream house I was less than a month from buying, my gym of seven years and all my friends there, and all faith in my job/career (Banking IT) after a corporate takeover.
But yet I cling on to these mechanincal loves of my life. I don't know if I'm being unwise or overly sentimantal, but there's some part of me that wonders if this is right...
Thank fuck I still have my family, my friends, my health, and my bikes I say. And music. Definitely music.

I've been watching this show called "Tiny Homes", or something like that. There's this tiny house movement that's occurring in some cities (cities like San Fran where living space has become increasingly rare and expensive). It's basically about couples that are downsizing from their regular sized homes and apartments to like 400 square foot and under spaces.
If they can downsize that far down the ladder, lol, you'll be just fine, bud.
Good luck with the move my friend. I'm sure everything will be fine once you get the move in the rear view.

Does the show do much to show the changing states of the couples moving Nif? Like, do people seem happier downsizing like that?
I don't watch TV so I never observe anything like this, although I'm intending on building my own house soon after I get there; an 'eco' house like they feature on a TV show here called grand designs. I really probably should watch a few episodes...

It has a brief recap after they've moved in and put in their own furnishings and stuff. They always seem to be really happy but that's just right after they move in, though.
Here's some examples of some of the homes you'd see on the show

Lol they're obviously very tiny spaces but the types that would be willing to live in them are almost exclusively outdoor types who already plan on spending the majority of their time outdoors doing thangs.
And of course a major, major draw is the fact that you can deck one out and it still be "cheap" compared to an average sized cookie cutter home in the suburbs.

A lot of the tiny houses are mobile, too, so they can be attached to a trailer hitch and moved wherever.. It's not a great depiction of the downsize and people's emotions after like Niff said
Good luck with your move

Thanks again Niff. This is the kinda thing I've thinking of building. I have a plot lined up with power and sewage run already, thinking of going for something cheap as possible to build, like re-using old car tyres:

I hear you can pull something togther for about $20,000 with a method like this. Pretty labour intensive, but a labour of love no doubt.

i have jsb. moved from a 3 bedroom/ 3 car garage to an apartment. it was a total nightmare. my ex was kind of a hoarder so it took 3 days of non stop physical labor to get rid of tons of his random crap. but after it was done, life was so much better.
but as far as this weird little tiny house movement goes, i dunno. i need space. they all have loft "bedrooms" (which is basically a bed w/o the room) where the ceiling is like 3 feet away from your face. that just seems like a potential head injury or concussion whilst getting it on.

Can you tell me more about how please?

Yes. Plus, waking up to a ceiling in the face. That sounds highly unpleasant.

it was better because i feel like a person only needs a few things. staple items. mine are clothes, a few art pieces/ sentimental things, and a few pieces of furniture that are special to me because i put work into them (paint/refinishing). i love these things. but some ppl just like to collect things just to collect them, and then before you know it the shit is taking over and you don't know what any of it is or why it's there. i'm having an anxiety attack just thinking about it. lol

I like the idea of minimalism, so from that standpoint tiny home living does intrigue me -- but how some of these couples live in 350 square foot living spaces, and even some cases 250...that kinda blows my mind.
I think 600 square feet is about as small as I could do. Maybe 500.

I hear ya. It's amazing just how much shit I've managed to collect since I've upsized. Like, the house and garage and garden were/are FULL of shit, it's all gone or boxed and ready to move now.
I have for a long time dreamed of a life where I have only the fundamentals. I guess life kicked my ass when it saw I started living against my inner dream. I mean really, why on earth do I need 4.5 motorbikes and a dining table that seats 8?

It's materialistic gluttony, and I've been well caught in the trap. I'm just glad it caught me now. Even though it's been stressful as fuck, I reckon it's some kinda spiritual salvation at work.

that seems reasonable. i wouldn't mind having a tiny house only to fulfill my childhood fantasy of having a swanky ass club house. but honestly i would live in a tree house in a heartbeat.
