Straw jar - sterilize or pasteurize
    #23422298 - 07/08/16 03:31 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Im going to grow some oyster mushrooms all of a sudden as i found, and bought real straw, which i didnt know existed around here.

I also happened upon some really big really wide, but still narrowed opening, gourmet mayo jars so i thought, why not grow in vitro, make some spores quick then shred up to spawn a big bulk lot.

I cut up the straw nice and short so allot would fit in the jars, albeit not packed down, soaked in water for a day, now ready for the pressure cooker but i wonder, should i be sterilizing this, or just pasteurizing? i couldnt quite find a definitive answer and think i heard somewhere that if its going to be fruited from the jar it should be pasteurized but im not sure, since i cant find anything relating to wether or not.

If i dont get an answer ill just go and sterilize it with the other stuff i have for the PC tomorrow.

Oysters are not good to grow in vitro. They need tons of fresh air and also do okay without any fruiting chamber or raised humidity at all so long as it's not exceptionally dry.

Best to make grainspawn first and spawn it to pasteurised straw.

aww, i see.

Well, its allot of soaked straw and i spent a while chopping, shame to waste it, ill stuff it in a plastic bottle and pasteurize that then. I have some king oyster in a jar ready i planned to attempt to grow in vitro, ill snatch some from that to spawn with, I only ever wanted a single fruit from that just to see what king oysters taste like, surprised it even grew actually.

what grain is least likely to contam for oyster?
It was my understanding oyster doesnt really need starches, just nutrients and cellulose, so grains dont make allot of sense for me, since they have a greater contam factor from the starches. Growing cubes that strarch ive been told is what fuels the majority of the growth, but for oyster its basically everything. Or is it a speed factor?

Either way i have the WBS on hand ill quickly go soak them now so they are ready for tomorrow.

grain just because of the many inoculation points make for fast colonisation of bulk substrate but any spawn should work. I think I have even seen people expand straw to straw.
Oysters are so fast and aggressive, you can get away with many things that wouldn't work out with other species.

looking at the neccesary prep work im hesitant now to do grain. I think ill do straw to straw as i planned but i want fruit them, i have several oyster cultures i got in a trade, i might try one of each and see how it goes. Probably have to do multiple straw bags but i have plenty of sub if it comes to that.
