Casing layer, how to?

Completely new. Been reading and researching everything at the moment. Tons of information. What exactly is a casing layer, what can be used as a casing layer? How much is measured out to be used?

Casing Some mushrooms need a covering layer of soil with a specific microflora for Fruiting. Casing materials include Peat, coco Coir and Vermiculite with addition of Limestone and crushed oystershells
You can case with anything that won't allow bacteria and mold to germinate on it easily. Vermiculite and coir are commonly used as well as jiffy seed starter mix. The main applicable use of a casing layer for cubensis is to slow down surface evaporation and allow for an ideal microclimate which greatly improves the odds of pin formation. This gives you a humidity buffer as well. Humidity in the room or even the chamber won't matter quite as much as that exactly where the pins are, on the surface. Most of us have taken to calling this surface humidity, since it is usually within an inch of the substrate. Some species require casing, cubes do not. But everything benefits from a proper casing layer. Some need pH balancing, etc. but I'm too baked for all that.
They're usually about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick, sometimes I go thicker if it's a chunkier more breathable mix. So, you gotta do math based on your substrate surface's area for volume, I just eyeball it, overshoot a little bit if anything.

If you're worried about what a casing layer is and you're growing cubensis then avoid trying to do one. If you stick with growing you'll learn about it just by being around a while and it will eventually come with the natural progression of learning the ropes. Intrigue is good but keep it simple

Unless you're using coir, might as well just case it in that case. Peat can be intimidating when you're still a newb but if you are using coir there is nothing complicated about throwing a layer of coir above your bulk.
I've had piss poor results whenever I tried to do without a casing layer so maybe I am a little biased on that front.

Alright guys, I should of looked this over once more after I posted. I've been researching day in and day out pretty much on this website about everything.
I'm pretty confident in my research and I've gathered ALL the materials I will need for a very good setup, gonna follow the monutub tek and have it pretty well layed out.
I'm not sure if you're supposed to say where you order from, but I placed one on lilshoptofspores. Do you guys have any experience with them or knowledge of their spores sent out and how well they colonize?

You're not and finding that out is just as easy as reading the rules, which you should have done before even posting. Spores are spores, they will do fine.
