Pine bark for subs?
    #23421544 - 07/07/16 09:09 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hi all, I am currently following this guide for p sub cultivation: http://www.fungifun.org/English/Psilocybe-Azurescens-Outdoor-Cultivation

"sterilized soaked wood chips. Particularly suitable are smoke chips, beech or alder, or chips used for animal bedding."

Would this be a possible alternative? - I have looked around various garden centers etc and have had no luck finding wood chips. I went into the store and the bark nuggets were also offered in ornamental and mini sized.

Yes, I have looked at previous threads and they have stated that pine bark is unsuitable alone. Is there something I could mix the bark with to make it suitable?

wood chips are for smoking, not gardening. its not mulch.

they are sold at Home Depot, Lowes, Krogers, Walmart, etc... wherever you find the grilling stuff like charcoal and lighter fluid.

Softwood is not what you want. Beech and alder are both deciduous hardwood trees. They contain signifigantly less resins and other antimicrobial substances that will greatly hinder colonization.

Noted. Thanks for the help.

I think I understand now, they would be general wood chips used in a fire correct?

These are pretty much my only options as I live in NZ. If these are a suitable type of wood, I would probably have to break the blocks up.

Disregard the two previous links, I think I found something closer to what you're talking about:

Used for smoking fish etc, taken from Manuka trees.
