Planting trichocereus questions

Planted a log of bridgesii yesterday. Black gold cactus mix is OK, but looks like it really is better to mix your own. Added sand and mixed it around. Has a decent amount of perlite with organic soil.
How long does it take for roots to form?
How often should i water?
Will sishsoap help get water through the sandy bits if it doesn't want to penetrate properly?
Will post a pic in a bit.

Don't bury it just lay on top of soil and maybe just a little bit under the soil line. Keep without water until it pups and has grown a little bit. After a month or 2 it should pup and after then you can water without issue.
A light watering will not kill your cactus but if it stays wet for long it will likely rot the bridgesii.
Do not water... if you are unsure if you should water wait another week or two. Watering once a week is ok during the summer IF the soil drys out but usually twice a month and less during colder seasons.

Yeah stick 'er halfway covered in the soil and don't water until you can give a tug on the cutting and feel roots holding it down.

What Modern said, no water until you are absolutely certain it is well rooted.

Don't place your newly planted cutting in direct sunlight either, place it outdoors in an area which gets minimal sunlight throughout the day, leave it there until you see signs of new growth, and then slowly move to a spot which gets more direct sunlight, this way you won't give your plant sunburn.

I usually see pups form within two weeks after cutting, but I have also had plants take 4 weeks to produce pups. If there's one thing growing cacti has taught me, it's patients.

really? I've had this cutting for like a month now... and still no pups. I had it sitting on my table for a couple weeks and planted it a few days ago.

Why would that help, if it's not pupped simply by sitting open off of soil and being bare for this long already?

The light should encourage it to grow, speaking of light, how much light is your cutting getting, and what type artificial/natural?
When you put cacti up during the cold months, you limit the watering and light so they don't grow under poor conditions and become etiolated, but once you start watering again, place in a well lit area, they come out of dormancy and grow.
So what gopener is saying, is that you should expose more of you cactus to light, this will encourage growth.
Why did you want to go the log route? I am curious, I tried this years ago, but I found I would get much faster growth when growing them upright, could all be in my head though.

It's all natural light... again, i don't see how that's helping even if it is true. If it has already sat on my table for over a month now, why isn't it pupping? I suppose I will just have to wait a bit longer.

Don't see how what's helping?
Do you mean exposing more of your cutting to light? Because plants need light to grow, if it's buried it's thinking WTF, who turned out the lights.
More plant exposed to light, means more photosynthesis, stimulating growth.

No doubt. again, it's sat on a table openly exposed to natural sunlight through the window for a long while and nothing's happened yet, that's all I was saying.

To answer in the same manner than you,
why cuttings dont grow roots and new growth in general until they placed on a medium?why they need medium to pop up some roots?

Because they don't. when I took some cacti out from my PC Pachanoi, they sprouted roots just by sitting for a long time in the same position, without soil. (some of these cuttings even sprouted pups). This is because the plant is actively trying to find nutrition and gravity aligns the growth hormons, leading to root growth at the bottom. I didn't see root growth till the cuttings had used up a lot of their resources in the logs.
To further clarify, this all happened maybe two years ago, so it's been a long time since i've had to root a cutting.

No different than growing children, they all start hitting growth spurts at different times, there is no set time for a cactus to root. Set it, and forget it.

Nicely done! I have a log rooted Peruvianus with two pups. One is 15 inches and the other is 13. They are both going to be cut today and rooted in a few weeks.
