Title says it
Friend needs $2,000 and asked for a loan. He has great secure job with ability to payback in a month
Offered to give me $1700 and a 2013 MacBook as repayment.
I don't have a laptop currently.
Yes or no?

Seems some of the early 2013 macbooks are going for less than 300 on ebay, so no, not really.

The fact that you're not getting repaid in full cash is something i'd be uncomfortable with.

Depends on the condition of the laptop, but I'd say that isnt a bad investment. Ask for the laptop up front.

My bad, was looking at some of the first results, and they turned out to be screens.
Guess it just comes down to how much you trust the dude - and moreso - how much you need a macbook instead of the $300.

Might as well just buy a laptop that isn't slow then, using the $2000 you have on hand.
If you're determined to help out your friend, I'd just ask for the money back in full when he can finish paying it rather than haggling for a slow laptop.

I think the laptop just needs a system restore. There's 2 other accounts with a lot of memory use

It might be overloaded with bloatware, causing it to slow down on startup and stuff, or using too many resources. The two other accounts aren't really going to slow it down if they haven't been logged into upon startup, as nothing on them should be utilizing system resources. Unless the harddrive is at or very near full capacity, there shouldn't be any slowing down issues.
You could get an SSD hard drive to install the OS to, should speed up basic loading by a metric fuckton.
Anything beyond that is really just an outdated processor though.

That's an expensive lesson to learn.
Don't think of it in getting paid back. Don't care if he's rich or you go way back, forget all that. Would you just flat out give this guy 2 grand? If not, then no, don't do it.

Yeah, if you (or the previous owners) have installed a bunch of junk on it, it might help. Or, not a system restore, but a fresh installation. Delete everything, install latest OS. That's not completely necessary, but is the easiest way to do so if you have no attachment to anything on the laptop.
I'm not saying that will help though. Without the specs, it's anyone's guess. Might have a dated processor, might need a RAM upgrade, an SSD hard drive will definitely help with loading and moving files.

It's a mac, it's built to reduce bottlenecking - all of the hardware is going to be around the same speed. If one of the parts is old and needs replaced for a speed boost, the entire setup likely needs the same.

I wouldnt do it man. He should be offerring to pay you back in full along with the laptop. But even then, id turn him down.
Just go buy a cheap laptop. You clearly have the money.
If he cant afford the wedding then maybe he should just hold it off until he saves more. Just my two cents.

This is an even better investment, obviously. How is he gonna have basically 2k in a month from now? Why does he need it immediately? Can't he just wait? I rethought the situation. If it was a drug dealer friend and I was chargin 25%, I'd do it, but not someone whose income i dont trust.

I wouldn't do it. He obviously isn't good with money or he would have $2000 in the bank. Don't they have parents that would help out with their wedding? If not, that might be another red flag.

Something about having a great, secure job and asking for a small loan doesn't compute (pun intended).

If it's for wedding expenses then I would do it if he is a real good friend. I would even tell him to pay me back just $1500 and consider the rest my wedding gift.
But he would have to be a real good, trustworthy friend!

I've loaned out a lot of money, at this point its something I would rather avoid, even when its payed back the whole situation is a hassle. Would not loan 2 grand, maybe $50 for groceries.
