1st grow, sort of. Now tear it apart please
    #23420117 - 07/07/16 12:41 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Ok so I have been toying with the idea of mushroom growing for a few years now.  2 months ago I decided to take the plunge.  Disregarding everything I read I decided to start with wbs.  I wanted to go bulk and wbs seemed like a good fit because of its price and availability.  I also decided to do 6 pint jars of the pftek because everywhere I read said it was pretty fool proof.  I think I've made most the newbie mistakes you could make, impatience being the biggest one.  I just couldn't stop peeking and the days seemed to go by so so slow.  Anyways this is my first medium sized tub.  Not sure if it's a correct mono, it's a tub inside a tub with perlite all around.  I must and fan as needed, keep the rh between 90-95% and the temp lingers between 72-75 degrees.  The substrate was not 100% colonized when I introduced fruiting.  I thought I saw cobweb mild because at this point, everything looks like a contaminate.  I've got another tub going right behind this that I just introduced to fruiting.  I'm posting a few pictures because I'm not really sure what the mushroom is supposed to look like as far as girth and readiness to pick.  They are growing super fast but they do still seem small to me.  Thanks forum.  I'm James btw.

Here is a better picture hopefully.  It's a small sterilite inside a larger sterilite.  My holes are a little higher then the inner tub so I know that's probably not ideal.

Just keep reading and your methods/ results will improve with time and experience. Just little things like odd hole configuration and noticed the tape at the bottom, light dosen't cause side pins, old info. The sub shrinking away from the sides and the microclimate in between the sub and the wall does, to prevent side pins use a liner. But not bad for your first grow:super:

When searching for info use the advanced search to limit your results to the past few years, lots of old info out there. Check out the links in the signatures of active members for good up to date info (links and teks in my sig for example) check out current threads to see what others are doing and the advice given to them.

Hi James, my name is :justno: Your fruits look like they ran short of water and fresh air. Fanning is not really the same as FAE and we typically don't bother with fanning monos. You are better off using more sub and just filling the tub rather than having a tray in a mono, I know some people do that with success but they also tend to really have shit dialed in too.

I suggest that for a first try you should be happy. Next time work on producing a bit more spawn and more sub to support the fruits better. Read up on dialing in monos as well.

Good job tho :congrats:

Yeah I understand that it is not a typical design.  I wanted to start small with the little tub because I didn't want to waste all the spawn I had worked so hard to colonize lol.  Then once I saw growth I had to figure out a way to fruit it.  I kind of combined a few TEKS while trying to give a mushroom everything it needed.  Just the fact that I got anything in pretty happy with.  The tub on the left I think is the more typical mono.  It's a difficult hobby especially since I rent and have to do this in the dirtiest of basements.  I have about 40 jars going now (10 of which I'm pretty sure have bacteria).  I want to be ready just in case I mess up the dunk after 1st flush.  I think I ended up using 3 quarts spawn to about 10 sub, which I know is a fairly low ratio.  The tub on the left I went up to 6/10.  Another rookie mistake (I thought the pint jars were actually quart jars).  Pretty sad when I do math for a living lol.  I also have a little zombie tub going with 1 cake, just to see how it grows.  I'm not in it for the money or even so much for the shrooms (though it is a nice benefit), the science really interests me.

I do have 1 question though.  I'm obviously getting ready to harvest my 1st flush.  What is the best way to go abou this?  Do I pick EVERYTHING, including the ones that look like pins?  Then I dunk it, drain it and it is ready to fruit again?  Do I twist and pull or do I cut them at the bottom?  I just don't want to pick everything if some of those pins are actually my 2nd flush mushrooms.  Should I case it in dry vermiculite and then heavily mist it?  I've read a lot but want to make sure I'm not reading old information.  Thank you everyone!

Is that big one in the back ready to pick?  Still not sure about the right time before the spores drop...

Bumping was not intentional, didn't realize I was doing it.  So what do you do, just go to your last post and add onto like I am doing now?  Or wait 24 hours until I can reply?

That one is ready, pick them as they mature individually either right before or after the veil tears like that one did. The caps will flatten out a bit before they drop spores, but it won't be long for that one.

Ok I did not realize I was bumping anything.  I was actually wondering why people said the word bump in the forums.  So I should not "reply to" whoever responded to me for now on?  Instead I do what?  Go into my last post and hot edit and then just type more stuff?  Won't that make conversations all criss crossed?  Excuse the questions, I just don't want to violate any rules unintentionally.  Thanks for your help.

Just don't reply a whole pile of times consecutively. It is unfair to other people with threads as yours will keep getting bumped back to the top. If you want to reply to more than one person, use the quote function to reply to more than one person per post.

Like so

Okay, etc.

Or just edit.  The 24 hour rule isn't really upheld but if you do it a few times in like 1-2 hours it could get noticed.

Almost.  Your reply goes after the /quote] but that's fine, still readable.  I usually hit Quote, scroll down, hit enter/return once or twice, then go back up and hit quote again, rinse and repeat, then I go back down and there will be spaces between all the quotes to easily put responses in.

Well I think I'll have about an ounce dry once this first flush is finished, I had 150 grams wet with half harvested so I'm just doing the math.  Not bad but not great.  I did have a question.  Is it a bad idea to pull mycelium from a fully colonized bulk and plop it into a few wbs jars to colonize?  I had made a lc and inoculated 20 jars with 1-2cc each.  It's been 48 hours and only 3 of the jars have a tiny amount of growth.  I thought lc was supposed to be quick.  I know there were spores, I watched it all get sucked up lol.  I'm afraid of running out of jars to be ready when these tubs are finished.  I just buried about 10 quarts of contaminated wbs jars, mixed with horse manure and covered with a little verm.  Not expecting much from that but maybe if I water it everyday Mother Nature will reward me.
