Mexico decided to add an 8% tax on junk food. Consumption has been reduce be 5.1%
    #23419464 - 07/07/16 08:23 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Who says taxes are always a bad thing?

Quote:

MEXICO CITY - Researchers say that Mexico's 8-per cent tax on high-calorie snacks has been successful in reducing junk food purchases, but only among poor and middle-class households.
A study published Tuesday in the online journal PLOS-Medicine showed an average reduction of 5.1 per cent in purchases of items subject to the tax, which was implemented in 2014. The reduction equaled only about 25 grams (0.88 ounces) per month per person.

But in a country plagued with high obesity rates, the study did not indicate whether families reduced calorie intake, bought healthier foods or switched to cheaper street food.

Researchers from Mexico's National Institute of Public Health Future and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill suggested future research "should explore how these shifts are linked to changes in the nutritional quality of the overall diet."

I would have gone even further to be honest would have slapped a 15% tax on that shit. That way the poor just couldn't afford to poison themselves and the little money they have would maybe be spent to purchase a product that is less evil.

Should your country over tax junk food?
Should your country over tax junk food?
You may choose only one

Even though I am sometimes a bloody savage for lusting after shitty frozen pizzas, seeing half a long aisle dedicated to frozen pizzas in the supermarket yesterday made me cringe at the way things have become.

It ought to be different but as their neighbours, how are they going to trump that?

I heard many Mexican cooks across the border in the states make their dishes for American's double so greasy to plump them up even more as in indirect stab in the back.

i like the idea.

Just like overtaxing cigarettes. U gotta pay a lot of taxes to smoke that dangerous health hazard that is cigarettes....

Same for junk, since its in a way "slowly killing you" if your super obese.

Mexico is gettin smart

People are creatures of habit.

Some habits are more destructive than others.

If people want junk, companies will happily provide junk as we all know.

Someone here made me wise to epigenetics.

Think of what we are already like(well not all of us) as a species. What makes the world turn.

Those who let all these addictions take hold and never again take hold the reigns of their own minds are sure to breed some good specimens and that could be quite something a few generations down the line.

I was at a Super Wal-Mart once and decided to check out their frozen food section, I couldn't believe how massive it was with prepared food.

The food was completely disgusting, how do people eat that stuff?  It was all high calorie, high fat, and low nutrition foods. I honestly don't know how people make a lifestyle of eating that stuff on a daily basis.

Why don't people cook their own foods?  It's cheaper, it's healthier, it tastes so much better.

Because back in the day we had a home economics class in school where they taught you useful things such as cooking, sewing, nutrition etc. Now it's been replaced by classical languages and drama or some shit.

People just don't know how to do basic shit anymore so they just go to the restaurant.I've read somewhere that close to 60% of 15 year olds don't know how to hardboil an egg.

I like packaged food for the convinence.

Little clean up, little work involved, more free time.

Thats why packaged food rules.

But homemade is better but the clean up is horendous! :wtfsonic:
