Some notes on addiction
    #23419051 - 07/07/16 02:17 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

The brain works on many different levels but theres 2 main modes of thought we should be familiar with, 1 is conscious thought and the other is automated thought.  By automated thought I mean the part of the brain that does fast computations for us so that we don't need to think about them consciously (which is slower).  For example, when we have learnt to drive then we can do it automatically.  We do not need to think about every action consciously as the automated part of the brain does it for us.

This part of the brain works by associations.  So one memory will link to another in order to create the best automated response from learned experience.  The problem is sometimes this learned experience is incorrect.  So how does this relate to addiction?

When we get addictive or compulsive thoughts these are usually created by the part of the brain that does the automated fast thinking.  For example, you may see a lighter, the fast part of the brain instrantly pops up the thought ciggarette (if you're a smoker).  Now this is where it becomes an addiction or not.  If we give in to the compulsion and smoke the cig then this re-enforces the association in the mind, making it stronger.

Addicts will typically always give in to their compulsions as it creates a short sense of euphoria in the brain.  The solution is fairly simple though.  We just re-train our unconscious associations.  Firstly you have to tackle compulsion itself head on.  Deny the compulsions when the mind creates them.  When you have consciously done this a few times your brain will adjust and break the associations (they become weaker and weaker).

When you first do this you will feel very bad because you're missing the euphoria of giving in to compulsion that you've learnt to crave and give in too.  It doesn't take long though for the mind to re-adjust and any addictions can easily be broken.  It may also help to remove some of the triggers and associations for your addiction if possible although this isn't nessacery as the triggers themselves can also be re-learnt so they do not give the compulsive thought any more.

The brain is surprisingly fast to do this and typically the only thing preventing people from re-training themselves is just a week or 2 of will power.  Often the biggest barrier to stopping addiction (compulsive thoughts) is an unfounded belief that it is very hard or even impossible thus completely giving up your willpower to compulsion.  Any way just thinking out loud here bye
