I was recently given a bag of frozen morels and when I got home I noticed there's a bunch of larvae in the pits. also some of them are covered in a thin web of some sort.. at first I thought it was mold but it might be something produced by the bugs.. would you cut out the nasties and fry them up of should I pitch them?

Personally I usually don't worry too much with bugs/larvae in wild picked mushrooms. If they smell good and look good apart from the larvae, then I'd say they'd be fine to eat. You could try cut them away, but I'm betting once they're cooked up and in a dish you're not going to notice them. Freezing should have killed them anyway

You think the fuzz was byproduct of the bugs? Or could it be mold?

I probably wouldn't, personally, based on your pic though.

You could always just pare off the bad bits and eat what's left. I've never had to do it with mushrooms before, but I've done it plenty of times with other vegetables. As long as you cook it properly it won't make you ill , so all you really need to worry about is removing any bits that might already have off-flavours.

Just little fungus gnats, anyone that eats wild mushrooms will of eaten their fair share of them. If they are really badly infested you can start to dry them out and they will quickly vacate.
I think I would cut the morels in half and just scrape any that I see off.

The bugs and larvae wouldn't bother me, but I would be a bit more concerned about the white fuzz.

Exactly why I made this post. I've eaten bugs before (yum protein) but mold is a little sketchy
