So my buddy is coming to visit me. He wants to go camping for a week or two at the state campgrounds. I'm going to be joining him. What foods and gear do you guys bring? I already have a couple tubs of oatmeal, water, canned food, pbj. Trying to pick up a tent right now on craigslist

State campground? I assume it'll be accessible and not like backpacked in, right? Meaning, your car will likely be less than 50 yards away..?
If so, for an awesome camp meal grab aluminum foil, hamburger, potatoes, carrots, and onions... (all cut up)... Make the hamburger in to little one or two inch balls. Lay the foil out and put the carrots and potatoes down, then onions, then the beef on top... Wrap that up really well and cook it on the campfire... Throw it on a plate with some ketchup and you're good.

car camping is pretty simple man.. pack a cooler of shit you like, booze and firewood (if it permits in said location) .. for the weekend, i would suggest at least a sweatshirt or something that isnt cotton just in case it gets wet. a headlamp or flashlight is a must.
other than that man.. skys the limit.. i always like to bring some dice or cards something to do once the night falls.

Also, worth noting... For camping, don't buy the cheap aluminum foil; buy the good stuff or else you risk your food all over the ground or worse, in the fire.

A good headlamp is a must for me. I don't even use flashlights any more...
If I need one, I just use the headlamp like a flashlight. But I prefer just wearing the light. So much better that way.
The more lumens the better... And they must be able to pivot up and down.

The main gear I like while camping is a lot of dank herb to smoke
Walking around the woods getting stoned is magical, also some good tunes

Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

Food: canned food, lot s of meats in a cooler, s'mores ingredents, fruits, MREs (if i got the money), noodles and canned sauce, canned chili, canned soup.
For sleeping, i like to bring foam paddings for beds, or a foam style futon bed, sheet/blankets/lots of pillows, towels of various sizes, Purel, liquid soap, gallons of water and slippers/shoes/socks.
And dont forget those amazing dr00gz.

Bring tons of water, a grill, hot dogs, buns, bread, peanut butter, jelly, fluff, a cooler, white wine, acid, those veggie sticks things, etc

Walmart tents (Ozark Woods brand, I think it's called) are garbage! They're fine when it's dry, but after a few rainy days they leak like fucking crazy.
My girl is an avid camper and has all the legit shit, but we were going to a fest and wanted to use the (cheap) tent I had since it was bigger than hers. It rained all day on the 2nd day of the fest and the whole tent had standing water in it.
Got eveything soaked... Really put a damper on shit.. No pun intended

If the place you'll be camping isn't infested with mosquitoes and ticks then try a hammock with a tarp. Much nicer than a tent. Secure the tarp so it's in an A-frame similarly to a tent. Besides that, a semi-sharp knife, and a handy sierra cup for your mess kit:

If you turn the inside of the cup to face your pants, it will hook onto your belt rather nicely for a day hike.
A good and sharp blade is a must for a life tool. I like D2 steel for a daily carry.
If you're city folk, a good fire starting kit will help you greatly. I wouldn't know what kits to go with though, I prefer hand drilling with yucca.
Dress appropriate for the weather. Plan for sudden changes. Wool-everything for the cold. Synthetic and cotton for the heat. Get your cotton wet if you're overheating.
A small lightweight waterfilter is clutch if you're in the backwoods. I like ceramic micropore filters, but they're usually a good bit heavier and need more maintenance. If you don't have a filter, keep your water at a rolling boil for five minutes (why I keep a sierra cup during hikes even if I have a nalgene).

Well, she has 2 tents. A Small Kelty tent that packs down super small for backpacking (2 person) And a big REI tent (the Basecamp 6) for us as a family..
Some drunk asshole at Boats and Bluegrass fest fell on the Kelty and ripped the fuck out of it 2 years ago.. So that one is shot but, with the kid now, don't really need that one anyhow .

Old school camping meal right here. We used to call it Hobo Stew.

For me if I'm camping the meals are basic and easy like hot dogs on the campfire. The junk food for when I'm super deluxe stoned is the big deal. I mean you are sleeping in a shitty bed so why not gorge yourself on the nawty stuff? Candy bars, assorted chips, jerky, cookies, taffy, toffee peanuts, gummies, etc. Fill a bag pack with munchies and a big bag of weed.
