Synthetic Filter Discs causing contamination?

New to trying out SFDs on lids. I outlined the circles in purple pen so I knew where to cut. Attached with silicone and after I PCd them the ink had been dispersed through the SFD from the water that was introduced to it. I did 9 jars with SFD and 7 of them contaminated. It could have been the spawn I used but..

You didn't mention how they were started? MS Syringe, Agar, Grain to Grain? The culprit is probably not the SFD's. Spore syringes are notoriously dirty. Clean spawn is the key. Check all the steps in your inoculation process. You will most likely find the cause in there somewhere. Good Luck.

All of my SFDs have ink dispersed into them, that's normal if you drew circles. I highly doubt switching to a better filter type is what caused contamination in this case.

SFDs are the best filters out there. Mine are thinner than a paper and I must have given some of them like 15 cycles at the least. I was scared that they won't last long due to them being so thin but they have me impressed. You seem to be using the mycological SFDs which are pretty darn thick in comparison, if they weren't kept wet after sterilization, they are not to blame.

Paper thin eh? cool. Are they cheaper than mycological ones?

Yeah, spent like 35euro for 100SFDs. I mean, they still scare the living shit out of me, something that thin is bound to fail one day or another. My next buy will be proper SFDs for sure, the only setback is that there is no european vendor for them except for one in the UK who sells them at a ridiculously high price.

I used grain2grain. Im pretty sure the spawn was clean, but I could always be wrong. Thank you for the input.

Thanks for the input inocuole, much appreciated. Maybe it was the SFD not drying fast enough after PC. I don't know what else it could be, honestly. Gonna try again and add a layer of paper towel over the lid before foil goes on. Hopefully see better results.
