Conflicting information regarding pasteurization temperatures
    #10125408 - 04/07/09 06:49 PM (15 years, 12 days ago)

I have just pasteurized my coir substrate using the following tek from SixTango, which says to pasteurize at 170-180F.
http://www.shroomery.org/8393/Oven-Bag-Pasteurization-Pictorial

Now I have been told by RR that I should have been pasteurizing at 140-160F! :mad2:

You're supposed to hydrate all bulk substrates with gently warm or even cold water, and then slowly bring the field capacity mixture up to 140F and maintain that temperature in the center of the substrate mix for an hour, without letting it exceed 160F during that hour.

Field capacity means when you grab a handful and squeeze hard, a few drops run out, but then stop after a second or two.
RR

So which is it?  Have I ruined my substrate?

I think as long as you stay within the range of 140-180 you should be fine.

140-160F for 1 hr. are pasteurizing temps.  temps higher than that(sterilization) kill off beneficial bacteria which leaves an open door for 'other things' to grow B4 your myc.  As long as your really clean with your teks you should be fine.

Hi!

I have tried to search for information about pasteurizing Sawdust (from Rubber tree) substrate in particular.

Would these temperatures and duration apply for Sawdust-based substrate?

I have been pasteurizing bags of composted Sawdust-based substrate in a cement chamber using steam. I feed live steam to the chamber till the substrate temperature reaches 65C (150F) and from then continue to feed live steam for 2 hours (substrate temperature never goes above 80C/175F). After I cut off live steam supply, I leave the substrate in the insulated chamber to cool for about 12 hours (the temperature of the substrate after 12 hours is about 60C).

What do you think about this practice and in particular about the temperatures for sawdust-based substrate pasteurization?

Very much appreciate your experiences

pasteurization is only 60mins once the core of your material reaches temps, Im sure its cooled enough way b4 12hrs..

Sawdust can be much easier to prep, unless it is supplemented.  Not many nasties living in there.

Aloha Medicinals uses Limewater and no heat for wood subz.  Fuel pellets can just use 'Bucket Tek' same with Coconut Coir
