Flowhood repair. Way to repair ripped filter?
    #23416444 - 07/06/16 10:08 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Bumped into a tote with my tub as I was putting it away. Slacker move. Wound up ripping a few tiny hones and denting pleats. I've had the pleats dented before with no problems just reshaping them with needle nose pliers. This is the first time I slightly ripped filter. It's at the very top. Pics later. Just wondering. Would it serve well to fix with duct tape?  Glue?  Maybe silicone.

Pics? Can't really say without seeing the damage. If it's a deep hole it's possible that the filter is toast.

Does more air pass through where the hole is? That would be a good way to tell if it's a goner or not.

Edit:

Silicone is your best bet in case it's letting a lot of air through. I would only keep that as a last resort though, post pics and see if more air passes through the hole than the rest of the filter.

:whathesaid:

Silicone is what u use for rips and tears.  I hope its not too deep dude.  I have a couple dents from impulse sealer...keep wanting to put hardware cloth over it but never seen to get around to it

I scratched mine pretty bad during the build, there were these round bolts that kept the table top bolted to the table frame which wreaked havoc on my filter. I've hit it a couple of time with jars as well, when the lids gave way all of a sudden but nowadays I'm extra careful. Haven't damaged it any further for a few months now, touch wood.

I've been lazy with the prefilter change, have been wanting to change it for a couple of months at least. Really need to get down to it.

Not sure if you can see well from these pics. It's at the top of a 2 x 2 foot filter. I wonder if I just shouldn't bother straightening the pleats out. Hard to see but the pleats bent into a cut into the paper on the filter. I'm wondering if readjusting the pleats with pliers might make it worse. When I turn it on it has even flow with lighter test so maybe best to not fuck with it.

If there isn't extra flow coming out of that big hole right there, it should be fine. Apart from that tear, the rest seems only scratched. I wouldn't mess with the metal pleats if the lighter test is stable, might do more harm than good.

Ive uaed hot glue. It runs when hot so it fills the cracks. If its deep lay it down so the glue goes deep. Also look into getting some steel screening over your filter face, its cheap insurance.

I used to have a screen in front stapled to the wood. I ran into a stretch of contams here and there and it had me worried that maybe the screen was harboring contams or even fucking up the laminar flow. For the 4 or 5 years I've had my flowhood I always question it, when I'm pretty sure flowhood is just fine and the only issue was bad workspaces. I've had to resort to old drafty garages, barns. Even a tent outside once. If I don't have it in a nice small area in the hotter months I get more contams than usual. I've lately had it in a nice small non drafty room inside. And have been having clean runs with the last few transfers with it and pretty sure I'm in the clear now. I'm gonna leave it for now. As far as not trying to fix the dented pleats or even fuck with the holes. I just did some g2g to a bunch of jars and they were from clean masters so, if they contam, likely then I'll try to fox holes. If not I'll just leave em. And Proly put another screen in front now that I'm using it in a nicer cleaner area.

Yeah, that's why I never done the screen personally. It would give some peace of mind for sure but I always feel like it would mess with the flow. I'm sure that the filters that come with a screen are tested for laminar flow before they settle on which kind of screen should be used.

I would do the same honestly, if there isn't any difference in flow between the damaged and undamaged parts, best to leave it as is rather than risk making it worse.
